I strongly suspect, my dear Mr. Scotty (is that ...on the rocks?) that you are close to the crux of the matter: some kind of neurosis. I knew I was (in youth, I must add) "bashful".
Paul
:) Why, dear Monbla, I wouldn't want to hurt your Lone Star State sensibilities, and if my choice of words hath been rather coarse, I do verily apologize. On a side note, I agree the word "bash" isn't perhaps the most elegant, and to put a crease -in a hat- sounds like a perfectly civil thing...
Steam, steam, steam away... I just finished un-optimoing my artificially optimoed Panama Bob hat. Steam, pull, push... I even found that, by pulling both ends of a section of weave in-between (two) sets of thumb and forefinger (or, is that the index finger?), that section curls upwards...
AND, I went back to look at the second picture in this thread, the unbashed crown, and it struck me how this hat has exactly the same crown as my Stetson campaign hat. Which is nutria, and a real tough hat, which I only wear in winter and when rain is more probable than not...
Totally from (highly fallible) memory, I seem to recall that the (Stetson) No. 1 Quality was just that: No. 1 (and no 3X would improve on that). I must immediately add that a "Clear Nutria", in my mind, is always something very special. I really don't want to open sterile discussions by...
Brent, those new glasses look far better with a hat than the old ones, which bring nothing whatever in the "looks" department... mind you, this comment is from a near-permanent hat wearer who bought his reading glasses, some years ago, without the slightest attention to the hat factor. Which...
That comment points dead to what I was afraid of: they're all different! The more I read about Stetson, Stetson dating, felt, style, price...whatever...the denser the fog seems to get. It's as if, in a certain sense, the "old" (yes, old is the correct and respectful word) history, knowledge...
Personally, I've always limited my travelling to no hat (so I can buy one en-route) or just one hat. But that's no reply to your question. I would try to get a hold of one of those sturdy (plastic, fiber...) travel hat boxes, possibly evev carefully telescoping two hats into one box, after...
Two days ago, my (formula 1 freak) son and myself laughed out loud at the preposterous notion that those skinny tires of days gone by lasted "three or four laps".
Today, at the (fantastic) Spa F-1 race, famous champion driver (survivor of the 1970's horror-days of racing) Jacky Ickx...
Several of my most sherished, most "valuable" old felts and one of my two Panama hats have been refurbished -out of real necessity, being "wasted"- with a generic sweatband. I've always tried to save the old sweats, or at least cut out any logos imprinted on the old sweats, together with any...
Here's my wish that you may, one day, be able to visit Cuba; Sir. It's a sad thing to subsist separated from one's earlier life, especially by political questions of one sort or another. ¡Que le vaya bien!
