Haven't read the book, so i approached it on the basis that it's a true story, because if it wasn't, it would be very average storytelling, having said that, the mis-en-scene is pretty good, and music and costumes very clever.

Yes it's a bit long and a little bit schlocky, but the battle scenes are really well done, and Hallelujah, it actually has some action set at the Battle of Khalkin Gol, which is a little-known but fascinating precursor to WW2, all I need now is a big-budget...
