As much as I like the look of many of the HH jackets any leather jacket over 2.5-3lbs and I take a pass. Most likely due to the amount of clothes I need to stay warm working in the Arctic.
The sheepskin/fleece flying jackets are incredable. However they are very impractile in almost all applications. Any physical activity and they are too hot, bulky and heavy. A casual stroll around or sedentary activity they would be fine. As I said these are wonderful jackets. I like the ANJ-4s...
I run hot and cold on leather jackets, due mainly to the weight of leather. I've had HH, steer and goat. I do very much appreciate the quality of materials and craftmanship of the quality leather jackets. Some are magnificent to view and hold. The heavier jackets for me to wear are suffocating...
I have one from Hillside USA in brown cowhide. It comes with a zipper and I had snaps added for the look. It came out heavier than I like due mainly to the signature interior pockets from Hillside. Overall the jacket is a very well constructed piece in quality of workmanship and materials.
I too have a JL the fits very well. The process with Alan was both minimal and pleasant. I would ask "Can you do this or that?" The answer was always "yes". Alan would give suggestions based upon the production of thousands of jackets. The result is a nice product. I think one byproduct of this...
I nominate the song 'Quality Shoe' by Mark Knopfler as the thread song. I do not know how to post links but give it a listen on youtube. Computer ignorance is probably a clue as to why I prefer quality handmade items such as leather jackets and custom footwear.
I too prefer goat. Primarily due to its lighter overall weight, resistance to scuffing, scratching and retaining a good look. I have 2: 1) a JL N-200 and 2) a Wings Signature A2. Both are very well constructed with fine materials and craftmanship. The N-200 is heavier due to the biswing back and...
I don't want to get too wrapped around the axle on this. The point I'm trying to articulate is this: is the product a quality product irrespective of price? The VW example illustrates my point. Some were indeed fine quality and some were not yet they were about the same price. I will end with...
Value is a different from quality. Say you can get an Aero on the bay for say $300.00 and a new one for $1000.00. Quality is equivalent but the $300.00 piece is a better value.
For me price is not a measure of quality. The jacket has to stand on its own. There are certainly levels and measures of quality, but 'good quality for the price' isn't one of them.
I've worn White's for about 40 years. I have visited Nick's shop. Nick's boots are every bit equal to White's. I would not have a problem getting a pair from Nick's. BTY, the wait time for boots this time of year is usually longer as the boot makers are getting orders from the wildland fire guys.
This is an unrelated comment however may help with the operation of any zipper. I have quite a bit of workwear with heavy zippers all of which are YKK. To make them operate smoother I take Johnson's floor wax and apply a tad along the closed zipper. This makes the zip as smooth as silk.
