i have had many jackets improved here in Houston. mostly these were new zippers, collars or knits. i "tested" the tailor on a sure enough daily wearer that needed zipper and knits. also, i paid them a premium so that their best tailor would do the work. it ain't laser physics unless you are...
it seems the earlier series of FE jackets had labels stating "Spec 55J14 (AER)". Later, it seems jackets (and those JC proposes were made by Star), had labels stating "Contract No 261953".
restarting this older thread, i came across this info on Flying Equipment Co. on JC's sale page. John proposes that 2 separate series of Flying Equipment jackets were made. this would explain some of the earlier comments here, and the different labels. in short, he states that the later FE...
luckily, the purchase included a number of photos of the original owner, NAF Dunkeswell, his crew, and later photos when he was flying transports during the Korean War. also included a pair of gloves he presumably used. i agree, discovering provenance is not usually easy.
i suggest that we remember that many of us have been conditioned while buying shirts, suits, etc. to know the size that fits us without actually measuring the purchase. i think all would agree that baggy clothing in a flight environment is not safe. but, i think, few here wear flight jackets in...
i had an Orchard jacket some years ago as a daily wearer and like it a lot. unfortunately, i sold it to fund another jacket, which i sold to fund another jacket, and so on. the Orchard was a solid jacket that fit well. don't remember details for sure, but i think goat and dynel.
Guessing it is OK to post an M422A as my favorite G-1. i was lucky enough to purchase this one some years ago and consider it, for me, a grail-level jacket. First, it is in VGC in a large size for a vintage WWII jacket (size 48). actually, it is a bit too large for me. Secondly, it is worn and...
one of my oldest jackets--a 55J14 (AER), probably private purchase back in the late 1940s, early 1950s bore this ID. i say private purchase (PX) because i've not seen any record of Flying Equipment Co., Chicago, of ever having a USN/USMC/USCG contract. this is my personal patch jacket.
to be honest, i have anticipated a number of trips assuming i could wear one of my leather jackets. in way too many cases, it was too warm for the leather. a few years ago, i ordered a Quantum (of Solace) jacket from Magnoli Clothiers. it is basically a Tom Ford redesign of a Harrington jacket...
PS: the Flying Equip Co. pictured is a 55J14 AER, and the address on the label is Chicago 13, Ill. as far as i know, these were not issued but rather private purchase, maybe available in Navy/USMC/USCG PXs. label below

since i'm rapidly approaching retirement and have 2 or 3 jackets that fit, i'm not too much in the market now. i check the market, looking for bargains or project jackets, but that's about it for me.

this is a very interesting thread for me. as a long time G-1 fan, i have enjoyed about 20 years trying to find a jacket that really fits me. i have owned and traded many jackets. i wear a 46 long suit jacket but have a short torso, long arms and legs, with one arm longer than the other. kind of...
