No worries, I would love to get your perspective on these points that were raised during this thread to keep this discussion about the topic and not about the people:
-With 5*, you get to talk to the person who is actually making your jacket, and not a salesperson.
-5* leather is better than...
I understand your points, and they're fair because I realize that my posts were beginning to paint me into a fanboi.
Because of this, I was trying to summarize my thoughts on my last post, but your post is prompting ac response from me. So I apologize for beating a dead horse.
Thing is that...
So this thread has made me reconsider making a potential gift jacket with 5* since it wouldn't be for me. So I got caught up reading through the 5* thread, and well it seems that I personally would not want to send $500+ worth of materials. Now that there are more experiences with 5*, there is...
100%. Cost of living, living wages, etc vary wildly by location. Some places makes a few hundred a month have a better standard of living than people making a few grand at a different place.
A valid point to raise, but a point I was trying to avoid by clumsily dancing around by highlighting the $20 labor cost, shopping local, made in US, etc. I didn't want to derail this into a political discussion. Just trying to keep this discussion as much about the products and objective points...
I'm no expert either but it looks like the hide had some shrinkage at the seam, as if it was pulled taut when being sewn, and then shrank. Or perhaps there was a crease in the hide or something.
Defect or not, 1400 should afford you something that makes you feel like a million bucks, and if it...
I think 5* presents a unique opportunity to have access to a leather artisan from Pakistan in your back pocket to try stuff out. But seems like no one is willing them to send them big name leather, at which case the cost will be a lot closer between the two companies.
Yup, absolutely. But also keep in mind that the average US income is heavily lifted by a handful of cities, the remainder of the country is alot lower.
Btw, Amsterdam was one of the most beautiful cities I've ever been to, so photogenic and just wonderful people.
In San Francisco, the poverty household income line is 101k/year, loosely translates to about 25/hr per household adult.
Our homeless situation is very indicative of this.
I dont want to pry into your life situation, but man in alot of ways I feel you brother. Around here, you can't buy a...
Btw, not that my feelings are hurt or anything, but that's why I didn't post my jacket because I know it's nothing interesting. I like to say I got ahead of the trend of a minimalist cross zip and just wanted a hearty leather. I didn't want my design choices to reflect on JL.
I am sad though...
All correct, the business that employees the seamstress needs to turn a profit on that labor. Bringing your own leather only complicates it because they're losing profit on the materials, so net profit for that job gets reduced. Think of a corkage fee or cake fee at a restaurant.
Hh121...
True, but JL also doesn't have the best resale value either, at least not yet, but I wouldn't factor it in. I mean a 5* may be a total right off, but was less than 400 to begin with, I think the depreciation hit on a custom JL will be comparable.
Although... A horween 5*... Hmm, point taken.
170 does sound high, but not unreasonable. I sent a care package to my bro one time when he was in UAE, medium-ish size box, not heavy, it was 120. CA is probably the furthest point from Pakistan. Base price was like 70 or 80 bucks iirc to send anything that wouldn't fit in an envelope.
Which...
Well, we established that the price difference is about $200 when using identical leather, again assuming $100 is the cost of remaining materials, labor, and shipping with 5*.
My choice of naked cow hide is a moot point, because now I am choosing CXL, and comparing it to a CXL 5* jacket, again...
No doubt, but I was guesstimating $100 for the remaining materials, labor, shipping, and profit. Shipping is probably the biggest input in that equation, otherwise I'd estimate alot less.
Ok out of respect to Hh121, I won't share verbatim the information that was shared with me via DM, the only information I think I can share is shipping leather to Pakistan will run 170.
So $500 for horween, $170 for shipping it to Pakistan, and using my earlier conservative estimate of $100 for...
No need for DM but feel free to do so, I think for the sake of this objective discussion it would be great info to share to help others decide for themselves.
