I think if you're going to do the cattleman on a wide ribbon hat you've got to have one with 5 1/2+ inches of open crown height or they don't look right
This Mallory, for example is in the 5 5/8 inch open crown range. I got this hat from gdurand and wanted to make it different somehow so I...
There really are some key tidbits in these videos that almost get lost. Roger's tip about the cattleman crease; that you shouldn't bring the side dents too far forward I've found to be especially important.
p.s. If I didn't say it before, great video, Roger! You guys have me thinking I've got...
Esther, well done! Really appreciate the feminine perspective on hats and shaping them.
Alan, great to hear your voice and see you shape that wonderful hat!
Moon, I think you just sold several new Borsalino Alessandrias! Well done as well! You made it look easy.
As I mentioned; when I get my...
Thanks, Harv and yes we are moving. Not sure where.
We sold our house in New Jersey 6 months ago and have been in Pennsylvania with the In-Laws as we've been looking for places to live. We both work from home now so we're looking for someplace that has a reasonably low cost of living but is not...
The weekend is off to a great start, everyone!
Moon, thanks for the kudos, I think you've made that bash your own!
Sorry to hear about Panadora checking out, hopefully not for good. I've done it myself a couple of times, keep coming back.
As my wife Terri and I are traveling the northern tier...
Moon, you might want to get to Bencraft sooner than later. Around March and/or April they are swamped with young jewish men buying hats for their pilgrimage to Israel.
of course they also get a huge shipment of hats around this time as well so they should be well stocked.
I'm with Moon on this. If I've got a vintage hat in my size that is a little tight I may give it a stretch but I wouldn't try to push it to a bigger size. Sometimes you can get away with it though. YMMV
HJ, I've had better luck giving Akubras a spray with distilled water and shaping them than with steam. I guess it depends if it's a minor tweak or a major job of wrestling it into a shape. The BGCD is my favorite felt of all my Akubras.
I'm shaping a vintage ultra thin Borsalino in this...
Looks great, Moon.
This is the bash I'm often shooting for but, like You, I'm going to let the hat do what it wants to some extent. I want my hats to be organic, clearly shaped by hand, not machine-like perfection.
There has been some spectacular hats today, everyone! I've got to make time for some individual comments. Just great stuff!
On the go with a Playboy today
So sorry, Moon. I know you've been after one of these for a while.
At least you're of a size that you have a chance at one. I'm glad I landed Buler's. I don't think I'll see another one in my giant noggin size. You never know what might turn up, hope springs eternal!
Looking great as always, everyone! Been swamped with work lately but I still check as often as I can.

I usually take my hat pics for here when i'm out in the yard with the cats. Since we sold our house we've been staying with the In-Laws who don't have a fenced in...
I've got two. I like the felt on them but hate the sweatband. It has the overstitch that is supposed to look like the old unreeded sweatbands but just serves to irritate my forehead. I take a stitch ripper and remove the overstitch (it's not what holds the sweatband on).
I was thinking a fresh...
I was thinking it would be useful to see this process in a fresh open crown hat. One that doesn't have the "memory" of a crease in it. Like a Camp Draft or one of the new Stetson open crowns. This would probably involve using some steam or distilled water. Might be helpful as well.
Of course...
Offering up my supplemental variation on the basic diamond bash illustrated so nicely by Moon.
I'll include the drawing I sent Moon in case it isn't clear in the video
Of course doing this in a fresh open crown may require some steam to set some of the tighter parts of the pinch. Subject for...
