You're more than welcome Brent. It was my pleasure making it for you and I'm especially happy that it fits. Not much margin for error with those stiff western bodies.
I don't think you'd necessarily have to boil the felt Bowen. Maybe just a quick dip in a pot of very hot water to loosen it up. Let us know how you make out.
I've never used it, but I would think it could be cut into rounds, boiled, then while still hot, hand molded over almost anything that will give you a crown shape. I'm thinking at least 4 baby hats from a square yard of felt. If you decide to try it, I'd be most curious to see your results.
Just a thought here Julie, but since it's for newborn baby hats, have you considered using flat sheets of blockable felted wool instead of hat bodies? At $25 per square yard, and cheaper still by the 10 yard bolt, this seems like a very cost effective option...
This has me wondering if perhaps we have some behind the scenes censorship going on here. I hope not. I'm fairly certain I originally typed "set some shit on fire". Sorry, but I've found the unfettered use of profanity to be an integral part of the hat maker's skill set.
Hello Julie and welcome to the Lounge. In general, a light misting of 99% alcohol is used to "fire" a hat. Be sure to extinguish the flame as quickly as possible unless you're going for that burned look. Brushing and/or additional pouncing will be required afterwards. I don't work with wool felt...
Wow! That brings back memories. I did the same thing to an old Resistol cowboy hat when I was a young hippie in the 70's. I thought it was pretty cool back then. Now...not so much.
I can't get beaver from them just yet Brent. I have some black rabbit/hare bodies coming from them as we speak, including one they call a "special pounce" and another in their "satin" finish. I'm looking forward to seeing the new bodies, but for now my color choices and felt options are limited.
