Is it me or has it become harder to sell things on Classifieds or anywhere else?

^^^^^^^ I get ”design” stuff from Australia in my daily email. I realize it’s representative of only a smallish slice of Australian architecture and such, but I get the sense that the coastal areas, where the overwhelming majority of y’all live, are a lot like California. On the infrequent...

Is it me or has it become harder to sell things on Classifieds or anywhere else?

^^^^^^^ The King Tut exhibit that toured the U.S. in 1978 made a stop in Seattle. My sister-in-law (RIP) somehow finagled tickets to what was billed a “private showing” and saw to it one of those tickets made its way to me. The event was well-attended but not so crowded that a person couldn’t...

Is it me or has it become harder to sell things on Classifieds or anywhere else?

I just read a piece online about a 1958-vintage, A. Quincy Jones-designed, Eichler-built house in Concord, California. For MCM enthusiasts, that’s like invoking the names of God the Father and God the Son, while eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Holy Spirit. The homeowner, a young fellow of...

Is it me or has it become harder to sell things on Classifieds or anywhere else?

I edited my post to more accurately reflect my sense of the level of hat-wearing among the masses, as it does more coincide with yours. Wearing a ”proper” hat may not have a guy sticking out like the sore thumb of lore, but he might still be identified as “the guy in the hat.”

Is it me or has it become harder to sell things on Classifieds or anywhere else?

I’ve seen it. It’s not common, not in the winter, anyway. But if the young fellow is thin enough and if his suit fits him well enough it can be an okay look in my book (although I could live without the high-water pants length), although I’d advise my fellow larger (and older) gents against it...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I suspect these absurd listings are made by people hoping to make their somewhat less absurd (but still absurd) listings look almost reasonable.

Is it me or has it become harder to sell things on Classifieds or anywhere else?

I’ve been hearing about “the return of the hat” for a couple decades now. I got no data, but anecdotally I can report that the “return” has been slow in coming. I suppose there is a larger percentage of fellows wearing “proper” hats than there were 20 years ago, but it’s still not nearly as...

Is it me or has it become harder to sell things on Classifieds or anywhere else?

I got the sense that on the more “male-oriented“ side (for want of a better characterization) — the hats and leather jackets and all — the early members regarded FL as a sort of spin-off of an older online “community” called Club Obi Wan, a destination for the Indiana Jones devotees. Its...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

This isn’t a joke, but it’s a joke. New ones can be had for less than a C regular retail (I paid substantially less than that for mine). On Saturday I walked past a house with lotsa native plants in the yard and a little sign proclaiming it an urban wildlife sanctuary or something along those...

Is it me or has it become harder to sell things on Classifieds or anywhere else?

^^^^^^ Just yesterday I paid property taxes for the year. The county assessor’s office put some comedians on the payroll, by the looks of it. They seem to be of the opinion this house is worth at least $100K more than we could dream of selling it for. It might have fetched something a bit closer...

Is it me or has it become harder to sell things on Classifieds or anywhere else?

I believe I’ve witnessed an evolution of sorts in your perspectives over the 18-plus years I’ve been hanging around this joint. That’s true of most everyone, and that’s mostly to the good. (Although I’m sure we can all point to notable exceptions.) If never altering one’s positions is a sign of...

Or … How does one establish (insert inept entrepreneur’s name here) in a small business? Give him a large one and wait.

You know you are getting old when:

^^^^^^ Kinda like the early 20th Century industrialist who was torn between opening a new automobile plant in Detroit or growing a lemon plantation.

    Missing Members

^^^^^^ Sorry to hear about Van, but not surprised. We communicated a bit via less public means. I knew of his increasing health challenges, of course, so I thought it best to allow him to expend his waning energy with his loved ones and others who were more central to his life. He and I found...

In deference to our British friends, I’m resisting the temptation to tell the joke about why the British don’t make computers.

    Vintage roadside

No, I don’t know the location, but I’d be not at all surprised if it’s somewhere in the American Southwest. And I wouldn’t be at all surprised to learn the tables and chairs were placed there for the photo shoot.

It can be interesting to see what simple exposure to the air can do to dyes over time. My understanding is that a U.S. flag of any historical period is kosher as far as the flag code is concerned. So go ahead and fly your 48-star flag.

You know you are getting old when:

There was briefly a 49-star flag, post-Alaska’s admission, pre-Hawaii’s. I have a 48-star flag — a casket flag, I think, considering its size and lack of grommets — that serves to cover a steel bifold closet door. I never liked the look of that door, as it just doesn’t work with the rest of the...
