Waxed canvas ... how does it wear?

You can find plenty of home recipes for re-proofing your clothes. I don't have much experience with this, but there should be plenty of reviews to go along with the experimenting. Rather than spending the bank on the likes of Filson and Barbour, you can make your own, and then you can play...

Waxed canvas ... how does it wear?

They make 2-layer and 3-layer Goretex to try to combat the membrane peeling off the main substrate. 2-layer is Goretex laminated onto a material, and 3-layer has an additional layer of material to help rubbing and abrasion of the laminated layer. When it delaminates, it's sort of like when...

    Japanese-Made WWII Repro Jackets

I understand your position, and I respect it and your choice. Truly do. I feel your situation is unique, though. Ask any expat living in Japan how well they're treated. How they're embraced with open arms and shown the utmost respect, almost to the wonderment if it is some kind of ingrained...

    Shave of the Day

Here's a guy who was trying to get the most out of a blade. 425 or something. https://www.reddit.com/r/wicked_edge/comments/l1tc8m/gsb_after_400_shaves/ Blade use in DE shaving is a weird one. When I first got into it, everyone was talking sharp sharp sharp. That was the only metric in...

Denim Jackets - New or Vintage

Patagonia's Men's Steel Forge Denim Jacket. https://www.patagonia.com/product/mens-steel-forge-denim-work-jacket/27850.html what's the scuttlebutt on this one? Anyone tried one on? Had one? Heard things? They're half-price at the moment. I like the pocket layout quite a bit, so it piqued...

    The ultimative Denim Trouser Thread?

Are there any pictures of those Prison Blues jeans from the back? I like the double-knee they have, but the site is terrible about photos. I'd like to see back pocket size and where they're placed.

    Shave of the Day

Maybe keep using your blade too. Don't throw it out too quickly. I've been DE shaving for years, and I still (can) get weepers on a fresh blade (first 1-4 shaves on a blade). The weepers stop happening after that.

Mountain Boots, I might be the only fan

I have a nearly perfect pair of Pivetta 8s. Back then, all the Italian makers made similar, great boots. Even old Vasque are of similar and great build. Not that Vasque was considered a lowly brand at that point, but many in the USA recognize Vasque as THE Italian brand because Redwing...

    The ultimative Denim Trouser Thread?

Rustler used to be one of the staples at feed and farm supply stores. Farmers and field workers going through a pair of jeans in a month or two, so there was a demand for $8-10 jeans. That price wasn't all that long ago either. Big Ben was another Wrangler utilitarian brand.

    The water-repellent thread

I can't say I battle the rain much. Especially if it is warm enough that I can't layer wool underneath. Wool can absorb quite a bit of water without feeling damp. I don't mind synthetics, like Goretex, if it is cool enough that sweat doesn't develop.* I have an anorak made with some...

I lost my beloved field jacket

$225? What in the heck is going on there? Millennial pricing. 65s are readily available on ebay for $30 a whack. You could try seven for poops and giggles at that price. Shoot for a smaller, Short size. I love these jackets, but I wouldn't pay more than $50...because as it goes as of...

    On yer bike!

What a coincidence! Just last week, I so happened to do some research on the 80's version of the Motobecane Grand Touring. Reading through several old catalogues of other brands as well. Beautiful bike. I'm envious. Thanks for sharing the photos. All those steel 15 and 18 speeders make me...

What was the last TV show you watched?

Craft in America. PBS series on art, craft, and artisans. I believe this entire season is only two episodes, but I wouldn't bet money on that, though they are never long seasons. One of my favorite programs on TV. Period. Though this season and last have been quite political, the rest...

    Tudor watches

I used to work for a guy who knew a guy. In the watch biz with connections. They couldn't pay me much, so once a year they would want to buy me something big. I could never let them do it. If I'm not willing to spend X amount of money on item Y, then I can't let anyone else do it. They...

What was the last TV show you watched?

I watched this in two sittings. I'm not familiar with the original. I'm not sorry I invested the time, but it didn't resonate with me beyond, either. A time waster. As everything dries up in the next week or so, I'll wish I had more of something, like this, to watch. I really don't like...

    Alpha Industries M65 Field Jacket

If you plan to work in the light rain or snow, washing an M-65 in something like this would be worth the trouble: https://www.amazon.com/Nikwax-TX-Direct-Wash-in-Waterproofing/dp/B07P61CQ96 I've used it on a couple different pieces of outdoor gear and have been satisfied with the results. I...

What was the last TV show you watched?

The Spanish Princess. Starz. From the free week. I thought I'd give the Game of Thrones actress and Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith, Downton Abbey) a go. I understand low budgets, but it was really lazy. A battle with maybe six people per side, and then a child on a horse with lavender canvas...

    Colchester Rubber Co.

I think I came off as more negative than I intended. The rampant cynicism in our culture is too often sold as wisdom or necessary. Skepticism can be healthy. Cynicism is ugly. I apologize for not being more clear. I love things like this. It's the marketing that strikes me. Regardless, I...
