I was in LA a few weeks back, and found a Lotuff tote at Club Monaco.
Relative to the Frank Clegg bags I've seen, it feels a lot softer and probably a bit lighter. Lotuff's designs, particularly the newer stuff, feels more contemporary. Their older products seem a bit more fiddly.
I've got...
Yeah, BKS in Exmouth are the real deal, and well worth a visit. I've had two suits off them, the first ended up a bit big after I lost a load of weight.
BKS was set up by Brian Sampson, and he sold the rights to the name for an off the shelf range to Frank Thomas a few years back. I'm not sure if he consulted on the design, but I suspect he did. He retained the rights to the name for made-to-measure, and his team continues to produce them to...
Does anyone else think that the heavier weight Majestic goatskin would be great? I wonder if Aero has any of the sample hide left...
I'm liking the rust a lot. It looks a bit redder than the previous batch.
I'm not in London, but from memory:
Lewis Leathers - 3-5 Whitfield Street
Rivet and Hide - 5 Windmill Street
American Classics - 20 Endell Street
Real McCoys - 15 Henrietta Street
Nigel Cabourn - 28 Henrietta Street
Son of a Stag - 9 Dray Walk
Rivet and Hide tend to carry a few jackets by The...
A lot of the rules for dressing are based on normalising your body's proportions.
For jacket length, the recommendation is to go shorter if you've got a long back and short legs, and longer if your proportions are the other way round.
I've got long legs and a short back, and think that hip...
Fjallraven make a range of unlined jackets out of G1000, which is a waxed polyester / cotton blend. They tend to have a lot of pockets, but won't pack as small as some of the Gore Tex styles. The Greenland and Telemark would be a good starting point.
I'm not sure if anyone carries them in...
Another brand to check out would be Rev'it. They do a range of cool, vintage inspired leathers with modern protection built in. Revzilla carry them in the US.
I've got their Fargo jacket, and although it doesn't have a zip-out lining, it's a bit heavier than I'd like for the summer. I'm after...
If you're worried about heat, you really want to get an Outlast lining. It's a smart fabric which regulates body temperature, and developed by NASA. Or witchcraft.
As for ventilation, once the air gets warmer than skin temperature, you don't want a lot of it. (I can't remember the exact figure...
I've got a feeling that the lining in a motorcycle jacket means it doesn't grip your body as much in a slide, which prevents it from damaging your skin. But I don't know the details off the top of my head.
I get the impression that John's schedule got knocked off course about three years ago when his mother fell ill, and he's still dealing with the aftermath of that. Last time I heard from him, back in October or November, I think that he was sorting out probate and a house sale.
I don't know all...
I like the Joe McCoy Deerskin Fringe Jacket. Fortunately or unfortunately (depending on your fashion sense), it doesn't come in a size big enough to fit me.
I came very close to getting a Rev'it Vaughn, but ended up with the Fargo instead. The reason was that the Vaughn has a built-in thermal liner, and would have been a bit warm for the Australian summer.
The Rev'it jackets are nice, and they use pull-up hides that should age well.
Iron Heart jackets top out at 46, though they sometimes come up a bit small as you noticed!
Indigofera come up big, as they're designed for hairy Vikings. They sometimes do leather shirts.
If you want lightweight, you need to get some Dyneema bonded leather from Ecco. There's an interview at Carryology if you want to know more.
Unfortunately, I don't think that it's widely available as yet. :(
In terms of leather bags, my absolute favourites have to be those from Bole Tannery...
If you're into the outdoors, Globetrotter are the equivalent of Cotswold or Tiso.
There's a good whisky shop in Berlin, which had a whole load of obscure and rare malts. I can't remember where it is, but I can probably get the address if you're interested.
