I once worked for a place refurbishing western hats. We never took in a single straw hat for repair. I can not recall the product Resistol and Stetson use on their shunting, but if anyone has a tag from one let us know. If I am not mistaken it is a furniture varnish.
Thanks for the kind words Mr. Coble, it was great to get to meet you and your wife. Working for nice folks like you is what makes this job so rewarding. Glad to hear you get such nice compliments on the hat, it looked great on you.
Also wanted to thank everybody here for the great comments...
That pretty slick. A felt Milan look.
How do you find the time to wear all these hats RLK? And have you chimed in on the "Most hats in a year" tread? Something tells me you might take the prize.
Good form, keep them coming.
I ran across a Stetson Fedora in a shop outside of Seattle the other day that had in interesting treatment. The edge was bound in thread with a sort of blanket stitch, not whipstitched like a western and not welted. Fairly standard tread matching the felt. Wish I would have had a camera.
I was...
I recall reading a story about John Cavanagh being a friend to the Kennedy family and that JFK carried a Cavanagh as more of a personal favor that any particular preference for the brand. Can any one chime in on that?
I sport a thinline handlebar and enjoy Firehouse Moustache Wax which can be found on line. I believe it is a beeswax base and doesn't set up too hard. For this reason in the hot weather I sometimes switch to Clubman, but in my area only natural(dries white) can be found which is a bit of a drag.
I never understand the folks on ebay. I mean the guy bashed the hat backwards! I'm not sure if he is unscrupulous or just....
well, you I'm sure you get my drift.
There are 3 vintage ribbons on ebay ight now.
look up "Men'S Vintage Fedora Hat Ribbon"
Petty sure thats not how to post that, but for what its worth.
Brown , Blue and Black.
Stratonliner Re introduced
Just got emailed this from Hat Life:
STETSON BRINGS BACK THE STRATOLINER HAT
We just got the scoop on this new Stetson hat (from the 40's) from the hat man himself, Duane Dewsbury.
Stetson re-introduced the Stetson Stratoliner Hat, originally created...
No Sweat, When I made my first hat I got some pointers from a fella in Utah who only did a small number of hats a year. At the time that was the only tool he used to fit customers heads and swore by it. I probably made a dozen hats that way and was more than happy with it before I got my first...
I agree with bendingoak, I use one as well, good but not great and if your only building a few hats they are not cost effective.
Try using a flexible drafting curve ruler. They can be found any where art supplies are sold. They hold their shape. So you put it around your head press to the shape...
I built a tight fitting cloche for a lady last year that was an 8 1/2, one big melon indeed.
I looked like this wearing it. Looked good on her though.
