Sounds like you have a spun silk plush hat rather than a felt. The silk plush is indeed delicate (even when new) and many brushes will harm them. Silk deteriorates greatly over time, and antique silk can be VERY delicate.

Bob's hat is too cool for words! I have nothing to compare.....my hat is from 50 years later.......I just re-worked my Stetson circa 1980 4X to a sort of modified horseshoe (or horse foot when you look at the middle of it). 4 3/4" front, 4 1/4" in back. Flat brim.
Wearing this today........
Then I re-worked this as I was not really happy with just the pork-pie crown.....this had a LOT of crown to work with so I went to town so to speak. 4 3/4" in front, 4 1/4" in back.......I THINK I am happy with this now....sort of a modified horse shoe.;)
Yes...you answered your own question as they were sold here as the catalog shows. Now Stetson's idea of a discount hat was entirely different from the other hatters who still were cheaper than even Penn-Craft's.

Here is the Grey Federation IV. It is quite the changeling.....has some blue tones here...some light looks very dark grey or even a medium grey. Very different from my first model grey Federation which is so dark most of the time it looks black.
Wearing to the shop today today i realized it...

Found it again when looking around for you.....realized I had not posted much from the catalog (most of these have 30 pages or more, this one is no exception). Still looking for the Styleplus......
