I suppose it depends on the type of weather you would wear your straw in. A former border of mine worked for John Deere, and he wore an Amish straw hat while out on the mower -- our climate is very hot and dry.
Also, I used to go to the lake all the time, and I wouldn't recommend a straw hat...
Thanks! Pretty old - 1940's. The flange is very shallow (me likey) and it was thoroughly moth-riddled on the under-brim and crown so I had to re-pounce it. The brim definitely snaps down but brim-up with this lid just feels right, for some reason =)
Also, I highly recommend @bond 's sweat bands. I've bought several from him -- in fact, one is in the mail as we speak. He has an Etsy shop named FineVintageFedoras. The leather is very nice. And he'll customize the size for you.
I've sewn about a dozen-plus sweats and I really don't like the awl approach (I'm not a fan of the inconsistent tension that tends to occur from stitch to stitch). A four dollar set of millinery needles and some good sewing thread is all you really need. I use a double back-stitch and it works...
You ever watch American Pickers where the guys negotiate with a hoarder for minutes out of an episode (over a piece the guy forgot he even had) just for the owner to shrug off the money and say he isn't selling?
