The “edge” in Bob’s 1940 ad could refer to the sweat edge and not the brim edge. I do notice on both of my hats that the sweat edge is very tight to the felt and one could say offers a “mellow roll” along that transition. Your theory seems to be a solid contender.
I have another Resistol that has “PAT. OFF. No 526196” on the sweatband just above the “Melorol”. After some research I believe this number is just the trademark for “Self-Conforming”.
This hat came with the original box. It has an interesting hand written receipt inside the box. The total...
Thanks Bob!
It doesn’t seem out of the realm off possibility that what started as a “new” edge treatment in 1940 got repurposed as a quality level by 1945. There could have been some cachet value in the name due to ”Melorol” ice cream that existed during this time and the marketing...
Has there been any advancement in knowledge in the Lounge on what “Melorol“ means? I’ve searched the Lounge and found references to brim treatment, sweatband quality, ice cream, mellow roll, felt weight, and felt protection level. I believe counter examples were provided for most of these...
I’ve had bad luck with sweatbands on No. 1. Quality westerns in the past but this one, while stiff, is intact. The liner is a gold color that is difficult to capture on my iphone. Felt is in great shape.

Took a chance on this hat with bad seller photos and no size. The bones looked good and I managed to get the seller to provide rough length and width measurements before pulling the trigger on it.
Looks pretty good after a quick brushing.

Bummer the fancy band didn’t make it. They must have had a cubic foot restriction even back then as shipping was 12 cents extra.
Great hat and great find!
Thanks Randy!
I wasn’t planning to keep this hat as it is too small for my 7 3/8 noggin. If you are interested, I’d be happy to send you a link directly once I get it listed. I assume that wouldn’t violate any lounge rules but I’m not sure.

Yes, I agree with Jared. For example, here is a hat I picked up recently for a few bucks that would have made a good donor for a Macready hat. I turned it into a curl brim hat but I think it would have been fairly straightforward to make this into a Macready.
Good luck in your search— it...
Have you considered putting a curl on the brim? Not sure it is appropriate for the hat but it might help with the balance and structure. I’d be interested in seeing how the pros do it!
