The “edge” in Bob’s 1940 ad could refer to the sweat edge and not the brim edge. I do notice on both of my hats that the sweat edge is very tight to the felt and one could say offers a “mellow roll” along that transition. Your theory seems to be a solid contender. -

Took a chance on this hat with bad seller photos and no size. The bones looked good and I managed to get the seller to provide rough length and width measurements before pulling the trigger on it. Looks pretty good after a quick brushing. Bill -

Bummer the fancy band didn’t make it. They must have had a cubic foot restriction even back then as shipping was 12 cents extra. Great hat and great find! -

Have you considered putting a curl on the brim? Not sure it is appropriate for the hat but it might help with the balance and structure. I’d be interested in seeing how the pros do it! Bill
