For a dedicated motorcycle jacket, I'd recommend your friend saved up a bit more or sell something to get a $150-200 used USA-made Schott Perfecto to protect his hide. I'm sure he can find $100-150 vintage ones that are as good as the Schott on eBay.
No zips. I love the look on my Zip Sleeve Highwayman, and I pretty much always slide my hands into those handwarmet pockets cus it's so comfy. Not so much on my old Schott jackets.
