My hat collection is less than 10 hats in total.
Some are reserved for dressier occasions, but my Stetson Roadster gets worn almost every day.
Doing some incognito banking today.
Another Stetson Roadster conversion. Removed the thin leather hat band on this one and replaced it with a 1 inch wide charcoal grey ribbon with double bow.
My other Roadster has a brown matching ribbon. They're my daily go to hats except for hiking and yard work.
I like my Banjo Patterson hat for hiking, yard work and general purpose outings. It was really stiff in the beginning, but after it got soaked in 2 rain storms, it's really soft.
Never felt the need to remove the lining or any need for vent holes.
I'm just south of Hartford CT. Western style hats are seen fairly often at the dairy farms around me. But around town, I see more outback style hats. Fedora style hats are pretty rare.
I steamed in a diamond crease in my Stylemaster as well. But me and my teakettle couldn't get the defined bubble in the crown like you did. Nice work!!!
Diamond crease seems to minimize the taper appearance in the front by widening the sides.
I tried doing a pork pie crease, but there's not...
For my tastes, the taper on a crown doesn't bother me. Because I don't like the stove pipe straight look.
A 4 1/2 inch crown height is perfect for me.
But several hats of mine have almost zero headroom in the rear. Steaming in a "bubble" helps, but sometimes not enough.
I've got a few wool lite felt hats for really nasty weather. Akubra Stylemaster, Stetson Whippet & Stetson Roadster are my "dressier" hats. Probably have around 10 hats total. Add in 3-4 caps. All of them tend to rotate in & out of rotation depending on my mood and the weather.
My Akubra...
For covid-19 related reasons, I haven't gotten my hair cut in 6+ months. I've recently decided that my hats look better with the brims turned down.
This morning, I was out in the yard with my older Stetson Roadster on with the brim down.
My wife asked me "Is that a new hat?"
I agree with you. There's something special in the felt in the Roadster. Softer and more pliable than several of the other models with Royal Deluxe felt. The Roadster just feels perfect on my head.
Plus, I like the 3 point "chicken feet" crease.
I forgot to mention that my Banjo Patterson is really soft and pliable after it got soaked in 2 rain storms during my morning hikes. ️
The crown seems willing to take on just about any shape now.
Almost all Akubra vary in stiffness from lot to lot.
After a month or two or wearing the Stylemaster it'll get softer. I have the Carbon Grey Stylemaster and I've changed from the teardrop to a diamond crease.
My Banjo Patterson is really soft after it got soaked twice in rain storms.
There seems to be some confusion about whether or not Stetson has discontinued the Roadster or not. It's still in their online catalog, but most retailers have limited quantities.
I was able to purchase a second one in almost new condition. As I've posted in the past, I don't like the thin...
This morning's hike started out in a Misty rain. It quickly developed into a steady to heavy rain. I was soaked, but didn't melt.
My Akubra Banjo Patterson says "what else ya got?"
It got a quick wipe down when I got home with a towel to get rid of the excess water. It's sitting drying &...
I own both of those hats.
My Banjo Patterson hat is my hiking, yard work and general purpose hat. It is indeed almost western thick stiff felt, but it softened up nicely after a month or so. During my 5 mile hike yesterday, it got soaked during a sudden downpour. It survived it without any...
I've had some minor repairs (ribbon replacement, reflanging) done by Van at JJ Hat's. He's done nice work. Typical turn around time is 2-3 weeks after receipt.
It certainly isn't cheap, but there's nobody anywhere in the northeast who does repairs.
Delmonico stopped doing anything more...
