Bought one of Art's ribbons. 12 ligne looks like it will be 1/16th less than what is on my 1922 Stetson, but close enough for me!
The most recent article I could find (2017), says they are importing most of the fur from France and Belgium and they are no longer processing raw pelts.
Agreed.
I can speculate as to why Akubra no longer does so, but it would only be idle speculation.
It seems as if Akubra's number one export market is now China as well as Tibet. Perhaps we need to find a Tibetan retail partner. :D:cool:
I was watching that one!
There are a few hats that have surfaced from Visalia Stock Saddle, including one I picked up from fellow loungers. I added more on the store in the western thread:
Western, anyone?
It was most likely sold from this building on Market St, currently housing a thrift shop.
I dunno, I think the full color last drop liner is much more recent than late 60's.
Are there photos of the box? Any label on the box? The hat should have some additional tags under the sweat.
I am thinking it is maybe a numbered edition as another possibility.
looks like they did a good job from these pics, how do you like their work?
I just recently learned that Shorty's is the hatter for legendary wrestling commentator Jim Ross.
It looks pretty close to the current "10x" Straw OR, the venting is slightly different. Perhaps a previous year's model.

The Fed IV would be the best choice of an "off the rack" hat for a Bogart style. I agree with Brent, it is not particularly large, although they often seem intimidating to new hat wearers because it does have a full, boxy crown.
Though since you have a good idea of what you want, you may want...
Pretty reasonable assumptions, but as Fruno points out, the 3ply ribbon disqualifies it from being an OR. 3x hats of that era tend to be liked around here.
I grabbed a natural nutria, and a featherweight black cherry and granite. The nutria is the only one I have an idea for. I've been wanting a clone of my 1922 Stetson campaign hat/possible Austral. I might keep the black cherry to build out for myself, because If I mess up, I already have that...
The sweat can identify the model, but in and of itself is not the model. We've also seen wrong sweatbands installed, a Whippet does not become an OR if the factory mistakenly put an OR sweat in. The hat becomes non-original if the sweat is replaced, but count me in the camp that says that does...
As Brent mentions above, the Open Road never came with such a ribbon. The original 30's version has a wide ribbon, while the model we know today always came with the thin grosgrain. Unless you are sure that the hat you're bidding on is a current model hat, comparing an older hat to the current...
