What's the ribbon treatment like on your Borso? Thin ribbon? From that angle it looks like it could be an Alessandria model, which is the Italian cousin of the Open Road.
The Akubra Campdraft was originally produced under Stetson license as the Open Road. They kept making the same hat but...
Not a hatter or refurber myself but I can answer the first part. Yes, open crown blocks are different depending on the style of hat you are seeking. Some are taller, some are shorter. Some have lots of taper built into the sides or front/back profiles, some have less. A popular choice for a...
lol! Good thing I've always played fast and loose with the hat matching 'rules' anyways!
Same. I've come around to preferring these older dress (and apparently "semi-dress") western hats. The "holy grail" hat is a black Boss Raw Edge with Fray sweat, but this one looked like a nice example of...
If you're looking at vintage blocks, it's best to go by measurements as opposed to marked size, as marked sizes are surprisingly inconsistent. But you want a block that is 1/4" larger than the finished hat size if you are doing a complete rebuild or a new build.
The hat above is an outlet hat...
Curiosity got the best of me on this one...

I sure wish Stetson embossed model names like that! Looks very 30's or earlier. Not much info on The Superior Hat Co. other than...
It's my understanding that the use of conformateurs by custom hatters is a relatively recent practice. Scientific Hat Finishing, for example, says, "before passing on to the more difficult processes of stiff hat work a chapter on conforming will be of value," and just further down the page...
Yes, seems like everyone wants to get into the hat making practice now. Supply of beaver bodies is limited, as Winchester is not always accepting new customers. As a non-hatmaker I might suggest not starting with the top of the line materials anyways as even experienced hatters sometimes have to...
BIN'ed this one.

I had never heard of an 8x Ultra Beaver either. Good thing the seller misread the sweatband and it's a 7xCB (I counted those x's three times!) Though judging by the liner...
I'd certainly be interested in an affordable block along the lines of a #52 and/or a 'creased' block for straws.
And I will say I'm actually somewhat intrigued by the idea of embossed textures, but the Buster Keaton profile was not to my tastes.
HIB = Hats in the Belfry. They have a handful of retailer exclusive runs with Stetson. I don't believe they're currently offering this but I definitely recall seeing it.
If the "future of hats" looks like a cross between a manhole cover and a burnt marshmallow, I am glad to have shifted my focus to pre-war hats.
I suspect I have a higher tolerance for the bohemian/contemporary styles than many here, but this is hard pass from me.
The formillion is the inverse of the conformateur and has pins that push outward to duplicate one's headshape. After the sweat has been installed the hat can be conformed with the formillion. Skip to about the 15 min mark...
