    I need some HAT help!!!!

Tim at Pure Beaver Hat Supply sells pre-made 2 ply bows. Don't know for certain if he has black. Look him up on instagram @purebeaver. I really would not waste any time or money on a hat that is sized "small, medium, large" but that is just me. Also, I don't know if this makes a difference for...

    I need some HAT help!!!!

https://www.stetson.com/store/dune-2.html https://www.jjhatcenter.com/products/the-stetson-dune that ribbon is usually known as a 2-ply band (because there's two "rows," there's also 3-ply with three "rows")

Indicators of a low quality hat:

Since we are picking nits, I think the welted edge thing needs to be delineated. The fact that the welted edge is prevalent on wool hats currently doesn't really speak to the quality of a vintage hat with a welted edge. My assumption has always been that the prevalence of the welted edge on...

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Very classic profile on that one, it's a good look! Hope everyone is staying safe and healthy. Looks like we're getting a Memorial Day heatwave in the bay area, so I pulled out my natural Panama OR, Meyer the Hatter special.

Sunrise Hat Company felt (nutria) and hatters’ tools

"Sustainable coypu" certainly is a step above "invasive giant swamp rat."

Sunrise Hat Company felt (nutria) and hatters’ tools

If I recall the discussion we had around this ad when it was posted correctly, it was speculated that this was a catalog listing error. I have another one saved to my tablet that I just noticed reads "nutria quality beaver," so who knows?

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

If it's the same issue I encountered shipping my hat back to Worth and Worth, the larger boxes are too big to process by some sort of sorting machine. IIRC what the post office called it was "machine processible."

Buying hat blocks--what does one need to know?

This a modern Stetson we're talking about? It's regular oval by default.

Can't quite tell from the resolution but that looks like either a wheat straw Milan weave, or a palm leaf straw as opposed to a Panama hat.

No, they just have the brim snapped down

I don't know which flange was used, this will probably be trial and error for you. I can however, illustrate the difference between a "flat" brim, an actually flat brim, and an unflanged hat body. The hat on the right has probably the flattest flange of my personal hats, but it is flanged...

Ok, we are entering Dunning-Kruger territory here now. The hats you just posted both have flanged brims. The only style of hat for which you would not need a flange is a completely flat brim, like a Boss of the Plains, or gaucho style. Not only are the vast majority of men's hats produced...

    You need a flange.

Brim binding is mostly aesthetic, though it does seem to add some structure and helps retain the snap of a brim. Wires are generally not used in men's hats (though there are exceptions) and when we do see them in modern hats, they are mostly low quality wool hats because wool felt won't hold...

Sure, get yourself the correct sized block for the finished hat that you want to make. You can try securing an extra felt body to the block and then blocking over that as well.
