Today it’s a custom M-422a Willis & Geiger jacket made by Steve Sellers. The goatskin he used was a batch of French vegetable tanned goat that is buttery soft and incredibly grainy. Steve said that this was the same russet goatskin that John Chapman used on some of his russet brown goatskin...
Hi Brian @saucerfiend,
The LW G-1 is definitely a nicer, higher quality jacket and it has gorgeous honey colored mouton and superb goatskin but this Excelled fits great, has above average goatskin as well as the added appeal of being a Navy-issue jacket (with the white Mil-spec label inside)...
My go-to jacket for work is a G-1; I’m either wearing it when it’s cold or it’s hanging up on the captain’s chair in the pilot house when (if!) it warms up during the day.
@Peter 1956 I can see why you horde these Excelled G-1’s! The leather is really impressive and looks identical to the hide on my 1950’s LW Foster as well as my early 60’s Ralph Edwards. And the fact that they aren’t cut as short in the body as those earlier jackets make them a winner. I’d...
Excelled G-1 again on a cold, clammy, foggy day out in the harbor. The goatskin on this is really quite nice for a “modern” G-1. The jacket is 20 years old so even tho it’s a current-issue Navy flight jacket it has great wear and creasing on the thick, supple, dark seal brown goatskin.
Ok, I just counted and I actually have 18 G-1 jackets in total. That’s more than I ever planned on having but that’s the nature of being a collector, I suppose. Afew I haven’t worn in a while but haven’t gotten around to selling. Others (like my original H. L. Block M-422a) are worn on special...
The last thing I need is ANOTHER G-1 but they are my favorite jackets and I couldn’t resist this one; a 1999 Excelled G-1 in a hard-to-find size 48. Found this one on the ‘bay at a good price. The leather is spectacular! It is reminiscent of the thick, dark seal, grainy goat found on jackets of...
US-A G-8 again today. Wore it all day today from Easter Mass at church to the movie theater then to our favorite Thai restaurant; what a functional and practical design.
Wearing my US Authentic seal brown goatskin G-8 during a walk on a misty, drizzly chilly day (and forgot my baseball cap back in the car! :().
A really well-made jacket that is one of my all-time favorite designs.
I decided my everyday work jacket (USW black G-1) needed extra storage. I sewed in a drop-pocket similar to a Flying Tigers AVG blood chit pocket except I used an 8 by 10 inch Merchant Marine flag.
It’s perfect to hold paperwork that you don’t want to fold into tiny dimensions to jam into a...
I just purchased a 1998 “time-capsule” Willis & Geiger bush pilot jacket from a charity thrift clothing store (at a ridiculously low price). It’s brand new with the sales tag in the pocket along with a still-sealed escape whistle and spare button (the whistle is a relative rarity with these...
