Rain off and on all day today; good G-1 goatskin is basically impervious to moisture (within reason, of course) and also pretty darn scrape and abrasion resistant, probably the reason the Navy opted for this type of leather when they first specified hide preference back in the M-422 era.
Early photos of one of the most famous Flying Tiger jackets, Tex Hill’s M-422a, show that there was no squadron patch. Later images (and the actual jacket in the Pacific Air War Museum) show the “ride the lightning” chest patch.
These are the 3 individual fighter squadrons for the AVG: 1st Pursuit “Adam & Eve”, 2nd Pursuit “Panda Bears” and 3rd Pursuit “Hell’s Angels”.
From the photos I’ve seen, many Flying Tiger pilots chose to have their respective Pursuit Sqaudron patch sewn or painted on the front left side of...
One thing to remember is that the AVG were NOT technically even part of the U.S. military when they were first created. For political reasons (since America was still neutral at the time), the AVG were listed as “volunteers” and traveled to China as “civilians”. They could not wear any of their...
Big Nor’Easter hit NYC today; sheets of torrential rain and winds 20-40 mph. Truly a rough day out in the harbor.
And by now it’s no surprise, I’m wearing a G-1.
With all this rain, it would’ve been a perfect day to wear a new Aero FQHH or LW 4.0+oz horsehide jacket to help with the break-in...
Looks like a well-preserved WWII original A-2! With leather jackets, sometimes the best advice to break one in is “ just wear the darn thing” (as so many on TFL have said). The perfect A-2 @Cocker, congrats and keep up the good “work”!:D
April 15 is Jackie Robinson Day (the date in 1947 he played his first game, breaking the “color barrier” in Major League Baseball) so I wore my Brooklyn Dodger cap with my Excelled G-1 on a very cold, blustery day.
If anyone is interested and gets to visit NYC, the most tangible remnant of RMS TITANIC is pier 54 where the Cunard & White Star Lines ships would dock back in the 1920’s and ‘30’s. The wrought iron facade is still there and if you look closely you can still read the ghost outline of the words...
My wife and I did a 9-mile walking tour of historic Manhattan sites that focused on links with the RMS TITANIC such as where the NYC Marconi wireless station was located, the site of old St. Vincent hospital where survivors were taken and the 6-story red-brick building that was formerly the...
An interesting note; Walt Disney studios designed the Flying Tigers emblems. The tiger artwork for the side of the planes were stencil kits that Disney’s people actually produced and shipped to the AVG! The shark mouth on the front were, I believe, hand painted by the squadron artist or local...
As far as AVG squadron patches, I don’t think there was any specific guidelines for their uniforms. As you can see in the above photo, not everyone decorated their flight jackets. It was usually left up to the individual’s personal choice.
@Carlos840 totally agree! And the funny thing is that it came in a medium sized box that didn’t require this ridiculous packing and folding and wrapping. When I first opened the box I thought someone had mailed me the Maltese Falcon!!!!
@Sloan1874 you are definitely not exaggerating about the way some people pack leather jackets; I recently bought a used 1990’s size 46 Schott G-1 jacket on eBay and this is how it was packed into the box! Folded up tightly and wrapped with about a mile of heavy plastic wrap.
Luckily the jacket...
On my Excelled G-1 I added an inside drop-pocket on the right side of the lining (I used a heavyweight canvas pouch that was formerly a Willis & Geiger belt bag). It’s large enough for a pair of gloves, any size cel phone, maps, envelopes, airline boarding pass, passport or just about any medium...
The WWII Bogen & Tenenbaum AN-6552 had a 2-ply waistband like the A-2. However most manufacturers of the M-422a made the jacket with the single-ply rib-and-rack waistband.
