Let me put on my reasonable speculation hat... The 1946 coat is probably wartime spec, and wartime coats would have been worn in all weather conditions, including by some combat troops or troops in combat zones. But by 1953 these coats would no longer have been used for field wear and would have...
I doubt even the companies in question would know what "proofing" they used in the past, if any. It was almost certainly a treatment done to the cloth before the coats were made, not something applied later, so good luck. I think if you want serious rain protection get a synthetic coat of some...
I watched this last night, with no expectations, and thought it was one of the best films I've ever seen. I liked the short length, I liked the great performances by a great cast, and I liked the dialogue (or writing, I guess). There were also some interesting camera shots.
I know this makes me un-cool, but for me movies are fantasy and escapism and entertainment, and I don't watch them to see my heroes get killed or lose the fight. There's enough of that crap in real life!

You've posted that coat before I think and it's always impressed me as an excellent old-school look! nice to see such large-size, clear photos. Question about the metal D-rings that hang from the bottom of the front and back yokes--did you sew them up? I thought they would hang down.
^ Excellent photo of Cindy Crawford. From the high point of the "supermodel" phenomenon, before the fashion industry started to favour super skinny waifs. Funny to see the one sleeve deliberately aged; I don't remember that being a thing at the time.
By the third round of measurements the seller was probably ready to punch you, but whatever, they got a sale and you got a great fitting coat, so all's well that ends well!
^ What a delight to see an old Aquascutum trench coat. With regard to the date, that's hard to say, since Aqua sold that basic design for decades, into the 1990s for sure (and maybe later). The big meaty buckles, the cloth and stitching, and the comparatively oversized collar suggest 1960s or...
It's safe to say that if you walk into almost any department store or men's store, whether posh or everyday, you will find a car coat in less than a minute. Car coats are short overcoats or raincoats*, and that's been the style for ten or fifteen years, or longer.
* It's easier to get in and...
Someone has posted most of the post-Tatort "Schimanski" series on youtube and I'm starting to watch those. In the first episode Schimanski digs through his closet which is full of M-65 jackets to find one that's wearable and not damaged, not smelly. Blink and you miss it is a glimpse of a tag...
The cloth means overcoat but it has so many features of a trench coat that it's ultimately a hybrid and could fit in either/both categories. The pendants on other forums can fuss about that stuff. Like you said, it's a beautiful coat, and Chaz is lucky to own it (I hope it fits well!).
If you wear enough layers then you'll be warm even if you don't close any of them up other than the base layer. It's a proven scientific fact.... Speaking seriously, as someone who is used to Canuckistani winters, it always makes me shake my head when I see what you're describing, especially in...
