It is higher. It is much closer to traditional Open Road dimensions. It can be bashed with some tricks to lower it a bit, but it will never look like the modern OR.
We love our house. We downsized from a huge Tudor (c1930) when we became empty nesters, and are back to a Mid Century Modern (1964) with no stairs and two bedrooms--it's the same kind of house we grew up in, and there's a reason these were so popular with our parent's generation, post WWII...
I don't want to discourage you from a custom hat if that's what you want. But if you've left behind a Stetson, and you want a stiff OR style hat, go back and have another look at the Akubra Campdraft. They will check all your boxes: weather, you can bash it however you want, OR style look...
I've had a 6X and the RD, and I think Stetson Royal DeLuxe OR is a fine hat, certainly nicer than a 6X. No, I don't think I would wear it in really bad weather, but if you want a Stetson OR (and why shouldn't you?) I think this should be considered.
I enjoy owning the modern re-issue open crown Strat, in silverbelly. It is a lovely hat. I would not venture out with it in an Oregon rain, I guess mainly because it can't be replaced--Stetson is not making them anymore, to my knowledge.
I could order up another Campdraft tomorrow.
But I get...
I got the last CD in Bluegrass Green in my size from Hats Direct about two weeks ago. They were an absolute pleasure to deal with. Email them and ask the time line--I imagine it's months out because of how the Akubra factory seems to be working, but I could be wrong.
I have an email into Akubra. I don't want to apply any sort of steam unless I'm sure I'm keeping the hat. And the jury is still out on that.
I suspect the brim can't be reshaped because of the reed inside that has a memory shape built in.
Yeah, after living with this for a bit, I'm not sure about it. If I could be sure the brim would stay flat I might keep it, but it's really made to slouch, and I'm just not crazy about the way it looks on me like that. The brim seems enormous to me although that may be an illusion.
As far as...
I'll be traveling to Europe this spring and have added an Akubra Traveler. I like it. And although it's traditional to wear it brim down-
-
I really like it with the brim flat. I have no idea if it will actually stay that way since it's not designed to, but I love it this way.
Anybody else...
Sporting a CD ala Truman: pinch and brim up. I think this is my favorite bash to date. In praise of Campdrafts, giving me a "vintage" OR experience until the day I actually acquire an open crown one.
Here is a Campdraft worn like Truman: with a pinch and brim up. Paired with a Barbour waxed coat. This hat --basically a modern "old style" OR--just works.
I'm almost 70 and have been sporting a modern OR--the style we associate with LBJ--since the 90s. And in the 90s I wore it with my Armani suits without a second thought.
I still pair it with a suit from time to time, although I have to wear suits less and less. But I've also paired it with...
This is great info. I knew there must be a difference between Strat and OR because--different name, no? But I never knew the specs. Thanks for clarifying that.
I have several pre-formed modern Strats. I love the look of the hat, but I love the Campdraft more because of the open crown. I have an old beat to heck OR from the 40s-50s that's soft and yummy but really a beater. The CD is the closest thing I've found to the look. I'm wearing it pinched...
