I own a pair of Wesco Boss boots and they fit true to size with the aspen of insoles they provide. I tried on a pair of Jobmasters once, and I believe they also fit true to size.
I think if you order a standard, off the shelf pair they might take returns, but I have it asked. If you fit...
I would get some boot oil to put on them White's, Wesco, and Red Wing all offer a tru oil, and this will rejuvenate the leather.
You have to remember, in spite of all the tanning it goes through, leather is skin. Just like your own skin, it needs natural oils to moisturize it, not water...
Simon,
Both White's and Wesco make a top quality product that will be well worth the money. You really can't go wrong either way. However, I will try to break down some of the issues so you can make an educated decision:
Fit / Sizing - White's seems to have a better handle on the custom...
Smittybat, those look fantastic! How does the thicknes of the Natural CXL feel compared to the black leather on your other pair (I assume the black is standard oiled black).
COngratulations on the new pair - those are going to look great as they break in. The natural CXL really darkens up and...
I might go in on that with you - we'd have to talk specifics on the leather, but I bet we could agree on something. I'd want to use at least 8-10 ounce leather, and I would love to try something that with turn brown with age - like the leather you see that is black on the outside and natural...
Thanks for the kind words! I ordered this pair on July 2nd, 2013 and they were delivered September 19th, 2013. That makes it just over two and a half months. I think Smokejumpers get built a little quicker, more like two months even - a guy at another forum ordered a custom pair of Bounty...
Ok, here are some pics of the new White's Nomads! It only took me three pairs to get to the classic black color. These are pretty much built to my "signature" specs - round toe (no option on White's anyhow), double midsoles, and Vibram Composition Half soles. Since White's uses a thinner...
By the way, my new black Nomads arrived yesterday. They look great, and I will hopefully get some pictures up tonight. I am not sure if the extra heel lift was the right idea though.... it feels pretty high! That's an easy fix though - I'm gonna try it for a while and see if I get used to it.
That's funny - I have been trying to get White's to do a two tone pair of Nomads, or even just a black pair with a natural colored welt, but they won't do it. I seriously considered buying another pair of Nomads in Distressed brown and dying them so I could get what I wanted. Now I am...
I agree with this. I love my Wescos, but (in my opinion) the brown leather they use is too dark. However, the leather they use is very nice - it's thick and supple. I just plan on eventually buying a black pair of Boss boots like everybody else :)
On another note, I just got a tracking number from Baker's on my latest pair of White's Nomads. Black smooth leather throughout with double midsoles, Vibram composition half soles, and natural heels and welts. These should be pretty classic looking. I am only 2-3 hours from Baker's, so I hope...
Ther are an older version, made before 2005. The leather was an earlier style that will turn brown as it ages. The newer ones are dyed black all the way through the leather.
I just bought a pair of teh current style on eBay for a killer price, but ended up returning them. The pair I got...
It's odd, but living in Oregon where it rains 9 months a year, the plastic/PVC heel material actually caught my attention for a positive reason - the plastic heel base won't get soaked in the wet. Other than that, I don't like the plastic heels either. I do like the cord soles though.
Smoothsailor - I measured both the shafts on my Wescos and my Whites a while back and they were surprisingly close in circumference. I will have to check again, but. I think they difference was negligible. The Wesco shafts feel a bit smaller in circumference though.
I have owned that exact Schott 689H jacket (briefly) and I can attest that the quality of Aero's Horween horsehide leather is much better than Schott's. It is also a documented fact that Schott uses thinner horsehide with a layer of felt (they call it a "fusible") glued to the back to make the...
