I've been meaning to ask you for some time, how is that jerky horsehide breaking in? Still stiff, or getting soft? How much do you wear it? Thanks, Bob
I had been toying with the idea of getting a traditional Guernsey (Gansey) sweater because they are so heavy and tightly knit, wind and rain resistant, that you can wear them as a jacket. I already have a "Chunkie" - it's the strongest, warmest sweater I own, and my favorite. From what I...
I wrote to the seller of this jacket and asked him if he knew what happened to this jacket (the Himel with the blown seam). Here is the short exchange, presented without comment:
I know this jacket has already sold, but I've been having a discussion with a few guys about how this damage to the...

You can find them cheap on ebay too - here's a 146 thousand to start with ;)

Brand new Orvis Himel jacket for sale on ebay - bid is at $56 - size medium.
I imagine it will go higher, but still might be a good deal for a medium sized guy around here.

Hey Sloan, Is the Harris Tweed itchy - particularly against the neck? I like wool, and generally have no problem wearing it, but thought the coarse Harris Tweed yarn might be hard on the neck. Do you still have yours? Wear it much?
Yeah, mine has some light colored wool mixed in too. I didn't want it, but Peter had some reasons for doing it that I have forgotten. If yours has a smell, it's unprocessed, undyed black sheep wool.
Sad to hear that they might be out of business. I just checked and their website is still up...
That is a nice jacket, but I like yours MUCH better - the curved back seams, the rounded pocket flaps, the angled pockets (your cateye look), the zig-zag stitching, the parallel seams down the front, and the snaps.
And, just to prove my point, I just recited all these differences from memory...
I have that same exact sweater! Don't you just love the smell? Seriously, I like it. Oh wait, is yours made from undyed black sheep wool? If so, it has that natural lanolin, barnyard smell.
My sleeves were too short, and Peter, from Sou'west, told me to soak them (just the sleeves)...
That coat is stunningly beautiful! I want one! And I live in a climate where I could use it a lot. It would be a huge step up from my blanket lined Carhartt chore coat - this color and style, to be exact:
Blanket lining:
It's a comfortable, easy-wearing coat, but there is not enough...
That is a cool jacket. I like it much better in the brown than black. I also like the dice and skull on the belt - although I would wear it without the belt. Is that also a skull logo on the zipper pull?
Is there enough room for you to zip it up? Is it comfortable, with good range of...
That is less expensive than a lot of things people collect.
It is a hobby that draws you into learning about things you might, otherwise, never had known.
Through this forum I have learned more about leather than I ever thought I would in ten lifetimes, how it's tanned, different types...
I just spent five minutes staring at all these pictures of your jacket... again.
You should never, ever think about getting rid of it.
It really is a work of art - much nicer than Einstein's.
Einstein liked his unlined leather jacket:

That is one awesome jacket! I really like the curved back yoke and the curved back seams. And the grain on the back is a thing of beauty already. Of all the new jackets I've seen on here lately, THIS is the one I would get, if I were getting another one.
I agree that the Jerky HH is...
