Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Moving the buttons a 1/4 - 1/2 inch is not much, and probably wouldn't be enough. Why not bring it to a decent tailor and see what they say?

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

I could be wrong, but I also don't think they made Longs in '49 or '58. I don't know what year they started to make Longs, but I have two Kersey 1969 coats in 46Long. I remember a while back that someone said they thought Longs were started in 1962 as the 1962 tag states an R (regular) there...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

The 1949 coats have an exceptional, beautiful Kersey material. I would say very dense, thick and velvetlike. I bought one for my wife but she wasn't interested in it at all ( go figure? ) so I wound up reselling it on eaBy. I currently have a WWII, and a 1950 or a 1951? Both are great Kerseys...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

I found it addicting for me. I went from one coat to now ten. I also have a pretty rare size - 46 - 46L(Long). I figured that since 46 46L was that rare, I better stock up on a few. I have 8 Kerseys and 2 Meltons which fill up the moth ball closet in my house. I got these coats about 5 - 10 ten...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Peacoat, Thank you for the heads up. I do have one size 46 WWII peacoat that is in mint condition. Size 48 would be too big for me. My wool closet is also filled to the max. Although I would still love to get my two fantasy coats - a 1949 46Long, and a 1958 46Long. I'm not even sure if those...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

A few years ago I had both a '49 and a WWII Coast Guard coat. Both were a tinch small so I resold them on eBay. Both of those coats were exceptional. The wool was just beautiful. What size is your newly acquired '49? If it is a size 46 that is very rare for a '49 coat.

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

As I mentioned once before I had come across a website which had a photo of a peacoat stating that it was a "1938 USN Peacoat". It appeared to be a WWII edition. Still can't remember where I found it.

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

I have 2 Kersey coats from 1969. One is labeled 44L (which is mislabeled and really a 46L). The second coat is labeled 46L. Longs in Kersey coats are rare. We're also not sure when they began to issue them. So far 1969 is the earliest year that I know of. However, there certainly could be older...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Peacoat, It was a few years ago (5-7) but I'm pretty sure the inside tag on the WWII CG coat was different then the Navy WWII coat. I'm pretty sure it stated "Coast Guard" on it as opposed to "Naval Clothing Factory". It also did not have the little emblem on the sleeve. The tag however was...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

I bought a WWII Coast Guard coat a few years ago. I think it was a size 44, but fit me a tinch small. I resold it on ebay. The Kersey material on that coat was incredible - velvet like, very dense, and very strong. . It was even nicer then my vintage Navy coats. Definitely a different batch of...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Boy, did I luck out a few years ago. I bought a WWII coat on ebay size 46 in almost new condition - the buttons and button holes were still a little tight. The sleeves had also been lengthened a bit so as to fit me better. That was a rare find. Condition wise it's probably my best coat.

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Just a thought - I looked up on ebay US Navy Peacoat WWII and a whole bunch came up. Some with good prices and in excellent conditions. Tailors ain't cheap as I have had work done by them on my peacoats that I bought on ebay.

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Peacoat - Was wondering - what year is the last Kersey. I thought that it was 1972? Also if I remember correctly the first few years of Melton coats were a dark blue color and not black? Do you know what year they started to make the coats in black Melton?

    Ladies Wool Peacoats

I don't remember if this was addressed before. Were there any vintage Kersey US Navy Pea Coats issued to women? If so, they must be extremely rare. I don't think I ever came across one during my ebay peacoat hunting days.

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Most collars on post war dark blue Kersey coats are approx. 2 1/2 - 2 3/4 - 3 inches high (wide). My WWII coat is 4 inches and also has the throat/chin strap under the collar. My 2 black Melton coats are 2 1/2 and 2 3/4. The WWII coats are very warm when the throat latch is buttoned.

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

I saw a 1938 peacoat somewhere on the internet and it looked just like a WWII model. They also have the outside pockets angled on this coat. US Navy coat pockets are straight up!! I hope not too many people fall for this.

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Was just wondering - is that a 1945 with 8 buttons or 10 buttons? I think the 8 button post war model started in the late '40s sometime?? Yesterday was the first day I started wearing my peacoats for this year. It got down into the '30s here in New York. Will probably wear again today as the...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

All of my measurements were with collars down right at the middle of the collar at the center back seam. Hope you find more peacoats. The dark blue vintage Kersey coats are not as plentiful as they were a few years ago. Sizes 38 and 40 are all over the place though (as in ebay). 42 isn't common...
