    I'd give the hat a good brushing and then lightly spray mist it with some clear alcohol. Just enough to disinfect the surface; not necessary to soak the felt! Then dye bleeding shouldn't be an issue.

    Nice photos of the event and interesting information; thanks for sharing Steve. I noticed some people wearing a "Tricorne" and some tall crown hats I've seen referred to as "Paris Beau" or "Clerical". I wonder if these hat styles were part of their production line when they started 1799...
