International shipping kills the deal for me, unfortunately. Both PB and PHD are 2-3X what a shipper really ought to be charging for standard international shipping.
Thanks, Tommy! I treasure every minute I'm in Kyoto, because I don't know how long it's going to last. That Borsalino is a funny one - I see it on my hook and I think "Huh, that's nice I guess." But when it actually goes on the head, it just has a certain something. It's a bit of a beater...
Bruno, it's Italian - late 50's by the best guess of the Borsalino Brotherhood here. It doesn't have the original sweat so no idea on Xs, or what the model name might be.
Warm day today and probably the only good weather day to see the cherry blossoms, so back to the old Borsalino. I have no idea what kind of felt this thing is - I suppose they used a range of felts just as the big American hatters did - but it's a great warm-weather hat. Amazingly light.
Heh, I haven't noticed that oversized look as a normal thing for beat cops here. You'll notice she's wearing a cherry-blossom pink shirt, which leads me to believe she was hired as temporary security to direct traffic during sakura season.
Except on Etsy she lists it as Daquino, which I think adds to the confusion.
Ginseng, looks lovely - what kind of specs did you give Luisa?
The only thing I could say that's a negative is that I wish she used some sort of plastic or oilskin in the liner, as the ink on the logo is starting to...
Back to the D'acquino today, at Kyoto Station.
Every so often I catch a glimpse in a mirror and say, "Damn - if that hat had a better head under it, it could be in a magazine or something..."
Today is the late-model (I'm guessing 80's, maybe early 90's) Stetson Open Road, at Fushimi Inari and the Toji Market (biggest folk market in Japan).
I like the look on this hat, but boy - when comparing it against my vintage fedoras and the Daquino it's amazing how much stiffer the felt is.
I haven't had any locals in Japan approach me to comment (that just isn't a very Japanese thing to do) - just folks at parties and such giving me the occasional compliment. I do see vintage or premium modern fedoras here - not often, but I would say perhaps more often than in the States. And...
Back to the Daquino today for a trip to Nara, posing among other things with the Daibutsu inside the largest wooden building in the world (though only 2/3 the size it was before it burned down and was rebuilt in the 17th Century) at Todaiji.
I've become quite taken with this hat, I must confess.
It absolutely looks that different. Or at least to a 95% degree. That visual impression was what prompted me to want to do a side-by-side photo comparison in the first place.
Again, of course we see that with fur felt hats (the degree to which I see green in my 3X Stetson changes quite a...
Posting this here because I think it's interesting, not necessarily because it's specific to Daquino. I was really struck from the beginning with how much this hat appears to change color depending on the lighting - I know that's normal with fur felt, but I've never noticed so much obvious...
