    fur vs wool felt

That's a good looking hat and if I were to have just seen the photo, I would not have guessed it was wool. Sadly I think we have strayed from Doc's question back to our age old discussion of modern vs vintage quality. So to re-address the original thread question " is an Akubra fur really...

    fur vs wool felt

Thanks for the links Steve. Very interesting. The Loden Trachten is an interesting hat with its felt "ribbon" and edge binding.

    fur vs wool felt

In looking through some hat just now, I did discover on heathered felt that I would guess is a wool rabbit blend form the 50's. It isn't a magnificent specimen, but it does not show signs of shrinkage or age much as a more modern straight wool might. So..for whatever thats worth?

    fur vs wool felt

Steve, I would be curious to know what the most recent wool felt you have that displays quality in its felting? I am sure we all agree that the quality of modern felts can't come close to rivaling vintage, but I would be interested to see if we could work out when wool became the stock/low...

    fur vs wool felt

All joking aside Steve. While I don't have any of the quality of wools that you speak of, I will back you up on the fact that non beaver hats can and are exceptional. The time frame of German and Austrian velours that you note are indeed some of the finest felt I have experienced. Far exceeding...

Not to be political but.THIS IS WRONG

I would say that I don't find the photo itself, nor the use of the flag in the image to be offensive. As shown in this thread, the image not only evokes strong emotions, but has opened a discussion about who we are as a nation and how we as individuals feel about that. Listening to others...

Place a phone call to the custom hat maker or hat shop you wish to work with. As it turns out, phones still work for talking and it is amazing how little gets lost in translation when talking one on one.

    German & Austrian Hutmachers

Very interesting Steve. Is it a fairly stiff hat, and if so, does the shell add extra structure to that stiffness? I was just thinking about the riding origins of a bowler and wondering if maybe it was meant to be added protection or perhaps for added warmth?

At the Dog Track... The Whippets

Here is a nice little fella I picked up the other day. Not too bad of shape, some moth bites here and there, but the inside is super clean which is nice. http://imageshack.com/a/img673/3088/HBk0tS.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img537/4435/OATbbS.jpg...

Needing a first class baseball cap

A ball cap hasn't been on my radar for a long time, but some years back I owned a nice reproduction of a wool cap from the earlier days of Baseball. The short kind with the small brim, think the Ty Cobb era. If memory serves me it was part of a Cooperstown collection. I think there is a...
