Scored this sweat Knox Milan with hidden ventilation yesterday. In great shape! This is also my second Fredrick and Nelson hat. Strangely the other is a straw as well.
Just found one of the hats off my list. I have very much wanted to see a Dobb's Airflow for sometime. Yesterday I scored this Knox version. It lacks the ventalated sweatband, which really cuts down on the effectiveness of the open weave design. But it was a great find and in wonderful shape.
I wondered if it was from the finishing process? Perhaps a small set of prongs to finish or dry the hats bodies on. Stock factory hat liners usually have a set of three small holes that are noticeable and I believe that comes from a stand used to starch them.
Very cool to see the other Mikado...
I can't lie Fruno, for some strange reason, I kind of want the Optimo one. Not sure why, as they were certainly never more than cheap garden hats. But at $150-250, I keep content with the picture and a laugh.
That almost made my list as well Jared.
That one fits my "I can taste the mercury" category.
Yeah, I know it's a crazy sick joke coming from a hat maker, but it makes me laugh. (probably because I inhale to much mercury still steaming out of such beauties):faint:
Shoot, just realized I didn't even get one of Steve's hats on my list. Only giving us ten choices is really not a fair game.
I might have to call an audible and go with any of Steve's high shine silver velours. Or wait, Dinerman has some awesome lids... oh wait, Jared has a few....oh wait...
Damn, this is a hard game for sure. If only there were an Alan/Robert/Steve page, then we would all be covered.
Here is few off the top of my head.
I believe Alan owns a Templeform by Style park that is pretty sweet. Interesting ribbon and all the original tags. I couldn't find the photos...
Last night I went to a birthday party and was gifted this hat, It wasn't even my birthday! And even more amazing, it fits! That makes it a 7 3/8.
Top is 6", brim is 2". Obviouslly the box is not the original, but cool non the less. There is a news paper in the box used as packing that is dated...
+1 to that Josh, and thanks for helping me waste a half hour:)
Steve, what is going on with this sweatband? Is it reeded at the top and the bottom? Very interesting.
I think we answered that one a while back, this hat might have been to much :)
But then again, you know the saying: "The longer you wear hats, the bigger they get", so he may get to this 7" brim. Just give him time.
I've flipped the stitch so that the straight stitch runs next to the welt edge not on to of it, as shown on your hat and Buler's Portis.
And a note too all, sorry for posting non german hats in this thread. They're only here for comparison.
I do like the interesting stitch patterns on welted edges. Here is one that looks similar on a Portis Supreme that Buler posted back in '08. Not sure how close it is, but you hat did remind me of it.
I have a machine that can emulate the pattern, but does not do it with a blind stitch. Meaning...
This is a Tonak that I purchased to re-block for myself. I would guess it was from the late 60's or even 70's from the original proportions.
This one is not a great felt quality, neither was the original finish work. Most likely a low cost hat. I am pretty sure it has some wool in it from the...
Tonak still does. I can occasional source them from one of my millinery supply houses but they don't always stock them. If you go to Tonak's site you will find a few patterns on their last page of Prints and designs under Products. I like the idea of offering them, but I don't see it as an...
Are you familiar with this brim treatment Steve? I know Tonak still produces what they call "Sculpted Felt" where the lines or patterns as it were, are cut into the long finish. But I don't recall if I have see anything like this on older hats.
