Binding does add stability to the brim, but the curvature is still the flange. AFAIK, there's no inherent correlation between binding and degree of flange.
Apologies in advance for the hat heresy.
Been wanting some custom liners for a while now, my 7xCB had a horribly stained one and being fairly modern, I decided to deconstruct it to make a liner pattern. A couple of hours later with a needle and thread and viola! This is a really slubby, ikat...
I came here to make the Outback hat comment too.
I remember liking the Dune in pictures but when I tried one on, I wasn't really digging it. Just speaking for me, the downturn brim just looked a bit funky. My personal preference is for a flatter brim profile.
Might be time to consider a custom...
Check out a few custom hatters.
Of the two, the Fed is probably the better choice, but I would not describe Akubra felt as particularly soft or easy to shape compared to what one can get with a higher quality felt.
Question: for those who have handled Boss of the Plains or Austral type hats, what's the crown height?
I can't quite tell what's going on with the tag above. 4" depth? 4 3/8"? Finish 318?
My ranger hat definitely looks like 4" on the tag but seems to measure out at 4 1/4" if I put a ruler on...
Gunner Foxx is well known for that kind of distressing. I have no idea what would do that kind of finish. Not that anyone asked for my opinion on distressing; but, I have a hard time 'buying' lot of hat distressing. I mean that in the sense of realism, not in the price/financial transaction...
Navajo was also used as a model name, it's one of the hats I came across when trying to guess the model of my VS refurbed Stetson.
Here's another Tommy Grimes ad from the Miller Stockman thread:
Call me crazy, but I actually almost like this one. I'm not really digging the branding of what is apparently a well known Japanese designer, and I would add a bit of flange to the brim and subtract the distressing. But I like the general lines and outrageous floral decor. Though that may be my...
So, the first Temple I bought way back when had some powder in it. That was a Sovereign grade, which isn't currently in the mix. My first Premier Strat got a bit wet and curled up, but that one was a bad batch and Matt Deckard sent me a proper replacement. I didn't notice any powder dye on it...
Well....
If we are looking at early teens and twenties, check out this thread: https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/1900s-stetson-catalog-reprint.94429/
Here's a dealer price list from 1922:
The styles we today would call cowboy hats would have been made in certain grades of felt. Select...
That doesn't look like the hat that came with the box. 100's had a Stetson 100 imprint and liner.

Notable that the case has the plastic inserts. They often end up lost or broken.
Thanks HJ, Eric.
Still chugging along here. Although our state had a good start, it looks like corona fatigue is starting to set in. Transmission is on the rise all over, and state and local officials have drawn back on re-opening. Though the bay area still has relatively low case counts (a...
Congrats on your graduation and welcome! Wonderful HJ, I've got to get my hands on one, but can't decide between the 'accurate' rabbit felt or beaver...Will probably lean in towards beaver.
