The Excellent Quality is among the nicest felts being made today, if they've kept Deckard's standards after his departure. Very soft and plush feeling and holds a crease well. But that's a dress weight felt.
My only experience with the current Hatco western lineup is the 6x and 10x. The latter...
Thanks Brent, I'm happy with the way it turned out. I was worried that 5 1/8" might be too short for the Indy hat, but it works very well. I've seen some HJs that did look a little tall on certain folks too.
Correct, this hat does not have "the turn." Even though that's one of the distinctive...
Amazingly, a box came today from the UK. I wasn't expecting this one so soon.
This is one of the new Herbert Johnson Indy Poet hats. The readers digest version one more time: for a long time the correct block shape was thought to be lost to history. Between the release of Raiders and Temple of...
Coincidentally, received 3 such bows from Tim this week.
On the vintage Stetsons I have, the 2/3 ply bands are tacked at the bottom. I feel it's probably less intrusive to tack on the 'row.'
Miller hats was not the same company as Miller Stockman, according to True West. Same family, different entities.
The No Name Hat Co was entirely separate, the box does not go with the hat.
I'm a fan of the current vented Open Road hats. They're shangtung, but the vents give decent airflow. Mine blew off once and hit the pavement to no ill effects. I wasn't even worried about it.
Herbert Johnson is getting packed for shipping!
The lighter, denser, dark sable felt was unfortunately only available in rabbit felt, so I opted for the standard sable beaver felt.
Thanks Stefan! I found the fabric on etsy actually. I like the red liners that show up sometimes in old Stetsons, and wanted something that stood out from the felt color, but not white.
Well, FEPSA gets credit for the pouncing, but I will take credit for the tacking stiches and ribbon! :D
I put the nutria/rabbit felt on the block, and I'll actually have to pounce this one, so we'll see how #2 goes. Aside from being inspired by the other self renovators and builders here...
Thanks much for the kind comments and likes. It was a fun process, despite the fact the I stabbed my finger once or a dozen times with the needles. I've already put the nutria/rabbit felt On the block because I've seen how the telescope will come out, but I do want a straighter sided block for...
First hat build. It is definitely cheating to start off with a pre-pounced FEPSA beaver body! Aside from skipping the pouncing, I didn't have to 'fight' the body at all with the blocking. Being my first, obviously there is much room for improvement. The sweat is seated better on one side than...
