I know I'm new here, but can you tell me who he is? Maybe a link to his site? I'd love to have a spare made but I'd like to get a quote before sending the hat off to have measurements taken.
I concur. I'm thinking...could I send mine off to a custom hat maker and have them reverse engineer a spare for me?
I really love the hat. One of the best eBay finds ever.
Whoever made it, I'd love to find a spare. The hat has a really thick brim and it's stiff as a board. I'd bet the hat can withstand some real abuse and bad weather just fine.
Well, I think I may have solved the mystery on who made the hat:

Now if I could just find another one!
Where can I find another one of these?
I got a hat off eBay yesterday and I'd love to have another.
It's styled to look somewhat like an Australian army slouch hat. The hat is olive green with a tan pugaree and vent holes on the sides. The brim is shorter and a lot thicker and stiffer...

Sorry I don't have a way to post a pic, but I got a hat off eBay yesterday and I'd love to have another.

After looking over the hat again I'll soften my "hate" toward the thin brim a little. It may very well be durable enough. I'm just used to and prefer a much thicker brim.
Right now I'm wearing an old Resistol "Clint Eastwood" style hat with thick brim. It's about 3/16" thick and stiff as...
I tried it on an Outback Trading Featherlite that has gotten wet so many times that there is no longer any stiffness to the brim. Even Kahl's Hat Stiffener didn't do much although I drenched the brim in it and let it dry for several days. I wasted two bottles on it. The brim is stained now by...
I tried sugar water on an old fedora and it definitely did not make it stiffer. I mixed sugar in the water until the water was white, so I don't doubt that I was using enough sugar.
I know it's a matter of taste. If you look at John Wayne's hat in "The Searchers" you can see the wind blowing that brim around pretty good, like there was little to no stiffness in that hat.
I just know my hats get dinged up pretty good. I want a brim that stays stiff and shaped even after...
Hair Spray as hat stiffener?
I don't know if it's just my technique or a crappy product, but I'm sick of Kahl's Hat Stiffener either sputtering out in droplets instead of a spray and I've put a stain on more than one hat with it.
Has anybody tried plain ol' hair spray as a hat stiffener...
Typo: I actually ordered the 7 1/4 and I got it yesterday.
The hat is tight, but not painful. It sits high enough on my head that I was actually able to wet the crown and give it a slight telescope-type bash. I also decided to steam the brim and shape it to look more like the hat in my...
I'm looking for a source for Indian Wars kepis. The main characteristic of an Indian Wars kepi is that it tends to have a short crown. This causes the hat ride high on the head, giving the wearer the impression that it's going to slide off.
I definitely do NOT like the ones made by...
Just for the record, Fran Wickham told me that the "cracking" of the paint on the visors is an authentic detail. I did not discover the problem of sweatband dyes bleeding onto my forehead until much later when the weather turned warmer.
Reread my first post. I made it clear that I wear these as a novelty and I'm more concerned with looks.
I am NOT a reenactor and I don't purchase this type of item with any more than a "correct look" in mind as far as authenticity.
In fact, I definitely do NOT like the fact that the dyes...
