Last time I found a ruined sweatband on a hat, I went back and put leather conditioner on all my other hats.
How often does that have to be done? Should I put some leather conditioner on a sweat band every six months or so? Or maybe after I've worn the hat and gotten it sweaty? Is it safe...
I can't tell you how many hats I've gotten off eBay that were in near mint condition, except that the sweat band had dried out to the point that it tore like paper.
I thought a generous application of leather conditioner was enough to save it, but my last hat purchased proved me wrong.
I...
I've got kind of a funny one.
Every time I'm with my girlfriend and we run into someone she knows, she makes me take my hat off. She says she doesn't want anyone to think she's dating a bald guy. (I've got a full head of hair). :D
Is there a "trick" to using Kahl's Hat Stiffener?
Either this product is the worst stuff ever made or I'm doing something wrong.
On some hats I've had remarkably good results, on others not so much.
On the bad attempts it seems like I have to use a whole bottle of the stuff to get the...
Some weeks ago while in Tombstone Arizona I bought a Serratelli hat with a telescope crown and a stiff flat brim. In the store, the hat looked like a dark charcoal gray, almost black.
When I got it home, though, and got it out in the sunlight, the color was more of a "blue gray"...
My "Winter Safari Hat", so-called because of the brown color (instead of green) and the lack of vent holes.
This started out as a Stetson Revenger (see my avatar) I got off eBay. The crown was wrinkled at the front, making me think someone had tried to pinch the front before, so I got the...
I have also read (maybe here?) that when you measure the inside of a hat you have to allow for that hat to be slightly bigger than your head in order to scrunch down over your skull. In other words, if your head is 23" then your hat will be slightly bigger than 23" in order to fit.
I keep seeing some rare hats on Ebay that I want, and it seems like invariably in listings like that the tag is missing. More often than not, the seller will take a measurement of the diameter inside the sweatband.
Is there a "pretty accurate" way to guess the hat size if you know the...
Several months ago I scored an inexpensive safari hat off eBay. The inner lining says "Dynafelt" but by the cooling holes on the side we had figured out from a thread here that it was probably made by Beaver Brand, and maybe for the old Banana Republic stores from the 1970's...
Can a hat be "shrunk" or "shimmed" to come down two sizes?
I wear a size 7 3/8 with the hat being comfortably loose, or a 7 1/4 for hats I like to be tight.
In the past I was able to take a hat in size 7 1/2, and by getting it sweaty, leaving it in the hot car for an afternoon, or whatever...
You ain't kiddin'. To further muddy the waters consider the Stetson Revenger. If you look in some places it's a Stetson "Buffalo Collection" hat available in Chocolate or Black. If you go to Millerhats.com, they offer a hat of the same name in totally different colors and somewhat different...
I'd like to find a spare of this safari hat I bought off eBay. Near as I can tell it was probably made for Banana Republic when they still sold cool adventure-oriented stuff.
The brim is stiff as a board and the hat is well-made.
Stetson Austral Conversion, Part II.
I liked the way the other one turned out, so I decided to experiment with my other Austral. I had gotten tired of the flat brim banging into everything, so I decided to shape this one. I went with what I call "Sixties TV Show Cowboy Hat" for the curling...

I've been watching this thread and I was wondering how tightly you tension a hat jack just for storage?
Mine seem to run the gamut from "barely stays in place" to "distorts the brim" in tightness.
If a hat is nearing the exact fit I want, I torque it a small extra amount. If a hat is a...
Converted Stetson Austral.
This answers the question as to whether the crown is too short to convert to a telescoped crown. I actually have two Australs. This one is a size larger (7 3/8) than I normally get (7 1/4). This allowed me "extra room" to wet the crown and tease it into a...

Cool. Thanks.
I may go the lazy route and cruise eBay looking for another one for a week or two, but after that I may send mine off to have it copied.
The original was made a little lopsided, so having a nice straight copy to keep as a spare while I wear out the lopsided one would be...
