The acetone might worry me in a brush-on liquid. In a spray it might just evaporate quickly enough to not matter. It's just nail polish remover after all.
Anyone care to try the aerosol Zinsser's on an old felt hat and post the results? :D
Wow. An interesting thread on both shellac and hair spray:
http://www.authentic-campaigner.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-18346.html
If simple Wal-Mart grade hair spray will work (with the caveat that it has to be reapplied when the hat gets wet), then I'll be one jolly rancher!
There was...
Someone suggested I try a spray shellac like this:
http://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/zinsser/interior-wood-finishes/bulls-eye-shellac
Anybody ever try that?
I'm getting just bold enough to try it.
I found an old thread on the subject, and I'm reading it now...
** Keep reading! I found a great new hat stiffener that I talk about several posts below this one. **
Maybe I'm just using it wrong, but I'm sick of the crappy results with Kahl's hat stiffener.
It seems to work great if a stiff had just needs a boost, but if I have to use a lot of it on an...
Supposedly from what I've been told you're considered a wimp if you wear the ear flaps down unless you're a garbage man or someone else who works outside in the winter.
I've owned one of the real Soviet blue "fish fur" ushankas since 2007 and I love it. I was afraid Communist manufacturing...
Question about Akubras.
I bought an Angler about a year ago, and I was disappointed that the brim wasn't as stiff as I like. Ditto a Plainsman I got off eBay a few months later.
Does Akubra make a hat with a really stiff brim, kind of like a lot of Stetson cowboy hats where the brim won't...
The Marine Corps fielded a plastic sun helmet very similar to the postal service one for a while. I'm not sure but they may be the same helmet, just colored differently.
I wore the equivalent made for the US Marine Corps. The hat was hot and constantly in the way. Right now I wear a Jaxon safari hat from Village Hat Shop that has a stiff brim. The hat is comfortable in hot weather. I have gotten the hat soaking wet and the brim returned to its original...
If you want to simulate what it's like to wear a plastic "pith" helmet, just put a plastic mixing bowl over your head and wear it out in the sun for two or three hours. You'll want a "real" pith helmet from then on.
Supposedly, people love these:

Unfortunately, they don't seem to have the khaki ones anymore.
In a total departure from the traditional felt or fur safari hat, I present my new favorite safari lid:
http://www.villagehatshop.com/product/all-fedoras/451139-88190/cotton-safari-hat.html
It's lightweight and cool for summer. The cheesy leather hat band is easily removable if you're careful...
I liked Temple of Doom. They overdid the "gross out" scenes with bugs and such, but other than that it was almost pure action. Crystal Skull was the stupid one. Who survives a nuclear blast by hiding in a refrigerator?
I realize most of the discussion in this thread is about felt hats, but what about cotton hats?
I recently acquired a couple of cotton twill safari type hats. We're not talking cheapo Wal-Mart grade hats but really nice ones from Jaxon and Dorfman Pacific.
Knowing these are likely to get...
Ever put a puggaree on a Kakadu?
I was fooling around eBay the other day, looking for a relatively maintenance free alternative to the felt safari hat, and I ran across what's turning out to be a rare bird in the form of an olive green Kakadu Soaka. You don't see the green color on too many...
I think that might be close enough. I've got a Beaver Brand safari hat in roughly the same color.
How's the stiffness of that hat?
One thing that's kept me from just ordering an Aussie slouch hat is the overall floppiness of the brim (from what I've seen in pics). I like a hat with...
Can you post pics of the Tablelands? I saw one on eBay and the shade of green looked more like Christmas than safari.
1961MJS: I've also been tempted for months to order an Akubra slouch hat.
I've been tempted to order one of these safari hats for several months now:
http://www.tagsafari.com/item/h-018_african+safari+felt+hat+zebra_hats
I don't know anything about the hat or the company.
I'm kind of reluctant to buy a hat that has part of a dead animal on it. I hunt...
