The Smokey Bear hat press.

I bought one at a gun show and I've used it so many times it's paid for itself many times over. When you reshape a brim by hand, it ends up with bumps and wrinkles, but putting a hat...
I'm actually not familiar with that product. What is it? Where do you get it? How do you use it?
I haven't found anything else so I'm willing to entertain out-of-the-ordinary solutions.
How stiff is that brim? The two Akubras I've owned had brims softer than what I like. They didn't hold shape very long. I like a stiff-as-a-board brim.
Here's an interesting thread from a reenactors' forum regarding Superior Cap Company. Supposedly they will only be making caps through the sesquicentennial cycle (150 years....making 2015 their swan song).
The thread is old so I don't know how much of that speculation holds water, but the...
And that is something I cannot live with when spending $100 plus for a modern reproduction. If it doesn't fit it's not going to be in my collection.
Referring back to your other comment, I've already stated that I wondered if Sekela sent me the right size. It's entirely possible that his...
Lest I forget: several months ago I ordered an Indian Wars kepi from Quartermaster Shop.
Worst piece of junk I ever put on my head. The crown disc was flimsy and insubstantial.
I knew that IW caps tend to ride high on the head, giving you the sensation that the cap will fall off, but the one...
I'm going to have to go back on my review of Superior Cap Company a little bit. I previously had stated that their quality was okay, but the Confederate kepi I got should have been more in the $40-50 price range, not the $95-100 they charge.
Recently, I began to get disgusted with one of my...
I seldom find a hat with a cattleman's crease that fits me. I usually go telescope or pinch front teardrop.
The cattleman's crease just doesn't fit my head most of the time. I'd never order a hat over the net with a cattleman's crease because 9 times out of 10 it won't fit.
Just looking, I'm guessing they're synthetic. They look like the ones on the modern army cav hats. They're just to get me by until I can acquire authentic Indian Wars cav cords.
I've thought of leaving them out in the sun for a month or two.
How often does leather conditioner need to be applied? I just acquired a new hat and put the Lexol to it before putting it in the closet. When should I apply more?
I have a hat conversion going where I'm taking a Stetson Hutchins and turning it into a tan Indian Wars cavalry campaign hat.
My problem is, the hat is on its way to looking nice and rustic, but the yellow hat cords look garish on it. The yellow is way too bright. I need a way to take...
This brings up a good question: should a person accidentally put a small stain in the hat with the shellac, would the rubbing alcohol remove that stain and allow you to recoat the area for an even finish?
I boldfaced and underlined part of your quote: that's a good way to put it.
If you put enough of the product on the hat, it will remain wet long enough to allow you to make final adjustments.
As with any spray product, good technique involves several small coats instead of one heavy coat. I...
I forgot to mention: as the hat dries the stiffness remains. Evidently if you put enough of the Bullseye shellac on it the stiffness is not affected even if the hat gets wet. That's good news for wearing it in the rain.
Once it's dry, if all's well and any issues can be fixed by simply...
As the hat dries I've noticed a few water marks appearing where the water skittered across the brim and didn't soak in.
I can't do anything until the hat dries, but when It does I'll hit it with another coat of the shellac. I expect the water marks to disappear just like the first time I...
It's been off-and-on rainy-drippy overcast all morning, so I've been bored inside the house.
I decided to tweak the brim shape of my hat a little.
I wet the brim enough to reshape it. The brim reshaped nicely and easily with a little wetness. As stiff as the brim is I only had to wet the...
I have a full head of hair, but my girlfriend thinks most guys who wear hats do so because they are bald. So every time we're in town, if we run into someone she knows she makes me take my hat off to prove I have hair.
I took the plunge last night. I went to Home Depot and bought some Zinsser Bullseye clear shellac in the aerosol spray.
In short, I AM COMPLETELY SOLD ON THIS PRODUCT NOW!
BUT
There are some cautions.
I started with my workaday hat: It's a Stetson Hutchins that came from the factory as...
Right now I'm searching the net looking for a local retailer that has the Zinsser's Bullseye aerosol in stock. I live near a small town out in the boonies so I may have to order it from Amazon if I decide to nominate myself as the guinea pig.
I WANT the brim stiff as a board! I want a cowboy hat that will hold up in the rain or sun!
My everyday use hat started as a Stetson Hutchins. The brim was literally as stiff as a piece of wood. I LOVED it. Then weather and wear softened it up enough that now it holds its shape but it's...
