A lot of people, myself included, tend to "size up" slightly on an Akubra since they tend to shrink after a few wearings, especially if you get them sweaty.
I've read a couple of reviews around the net where people complained about the size of the Snowy River being a tad too large and the short...
Ironically, I almost referred to my hat as the "Turd Ferguson" hat in my first post.
It wasn't that bad, but the crown was too tall, too wide and just in general, too big.
The brim was folded up into a "taco" shape instead of the more subtle way the brim edges are turned up on the sides on...
It's important to keep in mind that what I got did NOT look like their pictures on their website. I'm pretty good at reworking hats, so I reworked the crown and brim extensively to try to improve upon what they sent me. I still could not completely get away from the fact that the hat looked...
I stumbled onto this thread by accident, but maybe I can offer an answer. I don't remember exactly how long ago it was, but I ordered one of their custom hats called the "Pike" which was supposedly made to look like the cowboy hats of the 1960's and 1950's TV westerns. What I received not only...
The first time you get that hat a little sweaty and the dye in the sweat band runs and stains your hair so that the only way to get it out is a haircut, you will be cured of this silly notion that a Chinese hat is a good investment.
For my Akubra Angler, I just ordered what I considered a "size up" and let the hat get sweaty and shrink to my head. I'm one of those people who can get by with two hat sizes.
I'm a "long oval" in 7 1/4, but I can wear a round 7 3/8 without the hat feeling too big.
I ordered my Angler in 7...
That's an interesting observation. Looking at the 360-degree pics on David Morgan's website you wouldn't think there would be that much difference.
How is the stiffness of the Cattleman brim?
The fit of the crown looks like it would be the same as the Snowy River. Is it?
I like the...
Good to know. I wear the Jaxon safari hat from Village Hat Shop in the summer. It's about the lightest weight hat you can wear that still holds up in rain and wind, etc.
I was curious about the Akubra Snowy River's suitability for summer because I've read some blog posts where people have...
Thanks for the replies. I think you guys answered my questions. My alternate choice was the Stetson Seneca.
I'm not 100% satisfied with Stetson: I've gotten Stetsons that were "lopsided" so the crown was canted under the brim (meaning they never look quite symmetrical on my head). So I'm...
I've been tempted to order one of these for some time now, but due to budget concerns I settled for a Stetson Hutchins, which has been a good hat but I'm sure the Akubra Snowy River is better.
Some questions for you Snowy River owners:
1. Does the hat tend to ride a little uncomfortably...
TRUTH! My experience with Akubra is that it should fit a little loose when brand new and the first couple of times you get it a little sweaty it will shrink to fit.
I ordered a 7 3/8 (59 cm) and thought it was a tad too big, but got it to fit with felt shims on the sides. Within one or two...
Don't use Ballistol.
I borrowed some from a friend yesterday.
I barely touched a paper towel soaked with Ballistol to my sweat band and I noticed THAT SMELL.
The stuff has an odor that I literally did not want to be in the same room with.
Luckily I just barely touched my sweat band with it...
Here's one out of left field.
I've been reading some threads on the interweb, and I've read a few people recommending Ballistol as a a leather conditioner: it might not save a cracked sweatband, but might restore one that's a little dry.
Anybody ever use this?
Doing some experimentation, I noticed that steaming a hat's brim after treating it with the shellac tends to "set" the shellac and gives a really stiff brim.
If you start with a totally dry hat and just "dust" it with a fine spray of the shellac, you probably won't need to steam it, but a...
UPDATE:
I got a little overzealous with the shellac on a "beater" black cowboy hat this weekend. Unfortunately the shellac gave the hat somewhat of a "sparkly" look that wasn't apparent on a light colored had. I was able to brush out the sparkliness, but that undid the stiffening too.
So I'm...
While we're all reading this thread, I have a question for some of you hardcore reenactors: how do you store your forage caps between seasons?
We all know to store a brimmed felt hat with a hat jack to wick moisture away from the sweatband and prevent shrinkage/deterioration of the sweatband...
I wish they would start making the Revenger in that tawny color like they did in the 1960's and 1970's.
I don't know if it's an urban myth or if the story is true, but someone told me years ago that the Revenger was sold with the hippie culture in mind because of Jimi Hendrix, Jack Bruce, and...
I did not know the brass fittings were removable. I've wanted a slouch hat to use as a safari hat for some time, but didn't want the fittings for the upturned brim because those can get caught on brush and whatnot.
How does one remove the brass fittings without leaving holes in the hat?
Can...
