Civil War Forage Caps: A Review of Several Modern Sutlers

The main characteristic of IW kepis is that the crown is shorter than a CW kepi, leaving the wearer with the feeling that it's going to slide off your head. Dirty Billy's is the only authentic maker I know of, and his are not 100% authentic to that feel, if you judge by the two examples I...

Popping Stitches - The Most You've Stretched a Hat

The Stetson Revenger in my avatar was a botched eBay purchase. The seller had advertised it as a 7 1/4. It actually was a 7. Since Revengers don't grow on trees, I tried stretching it and the leather sweatband tore like tissue paper. Miraculously, after removing the pieces of the...

    The "Little Joe Cartwright" hat?

Well, I just received a Stetson Revenger off eBay, and it is indeed pretty darn close. It took me about ten minutes to steam the brim and roll it to look like the roll on the Little Joe hat. In fact, I'm convinced you could do this with just about any felt or fur "gambler" style hat. I may...

    The "Little Joe Cartwright" hat?

I wear a 7 1/4 in just about everything but surplus Soviet Ushankas. They must shrink two sizes in storage for some reason. I can also wear a 7 3/8 in some hats. I find hat makers don't always measure properly. :D As stated earlier, I hit the "Buy Now" for a Revenger on Ebay this morning...

    The "Little Joe Cartwright" hat?

One thing I should warn people about: I got a little overzealous with the Kahl Hat Stiffener and somehow got the sweatband wet with it. Even after drying several days the dyes in the sweatband came off in my hair and would not wash out. Luckily I wear a hat when I'm in town so I'm sure those...

    The "Little Joe Cartwright" hat?

I'm embarassed to admit it, but I ruined the Akubra Plainsman I got off Ebay trying to do just that.

    The "Little Joe Cartwright" hat?

Bill has always been polite to me. The worst I can say about his hats is that some of the tint from the forage cap sweatband may come off on your forehead in really hot weather. I've actually only waited months for a custom kepi. He keeps a lot of standard Union headwear in stock, since it's...

    The "Little Joe Cartwright" hat?

I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere. The closest thing to a hat shop is where you can buy an everyday cowboy hat off the rack (along with your feed and bluejeans) and about the most they have in the way of customization is to sell you a bottle of hat stiffener.

    The "Little Joe Cartwright" hat?

As luck would have it, I logged onto Ebay this morning and I ran across a Stetson Revenger in tan for $99 Buy-It-Now in my size (7 1/4), New without tags. Can't beat that for an experiment. If it works out I may just cruise Ebay for different colors in my size over time. I just hate the...

    The "Little Joe Cartwright" hat?

It may come to that. Previous experience with hatters has made me a little skittish. "What you see is what you get" applies here. I've been disappointed by many a hat that was custom-ordered by description.

    The "Little Joe Cartwright" hat?

I'd have to agree that's pretty close. As far as custom shops, I don't have a problem with that except I can't see a photo of a previous "sample".

    The "Little Joe Cartwright" hat?

I'm calling the hat style I'm looking for the "Little Joe Cartwright" hat just to give everyone a common visual. I have searched a couple dozen hat vendor websites and no one seems to make this style hat anymore. I located a place that makes an actual reproduction...

Less pricey Banjo Paterson-Indiana Jones-Akubra hat alternatives?

Just as an update I got the Akubra Angler. At first I was fairly happy with it, but of course as soon as you've worn it enough that you can't return it, Murphy's Law dictates that you'll change your mind. When I first got the hat, I could swear that in the bright sunlight the color was sort...

Civil War Forage Caps: A Review of Several Modern Sutlers

Civil War Forage Caps: A Review of Major Sutlers Ever since I was a kid, I have been fascinated by the Civil War forage cap, or bummer. Often erroneously called a kepi, the forage cap is distinguished by the taller crown and lack of a prominent welt around the crown disc’s top edge. This...

Less pricey Banjo Paterson-Indiana Jones-Akubra hat alternatives?

I went with the Akubra Angler for now: http://www.davidmorgan.com/product_info.php?products_id=1059 It was a toss-up between it and the Banjo Paterson, but the Banjo got one really negative review on David Morgan's site. I also like the vent holes on the Angler. Keep the suggestions...

Less pricey Banjo Paterson-Indiana Jones-Akubra hat alternatives?

That's actually a pretty cool one. Unfortunately they don't have my size (7 1/4). Keep 'em coming, guys! :D

Less pricey Banjo Paterson-Indiana Jones-Akubra hat alternatives?

No, I actually don't wear crushables at all. I've never liked them. But thanks for the other suggestions.

Less pricey Banjo Paterson-Indiana Jones-Akubra hat alternatives?

Greetings, Gents. I posted a question similar to this in the "ask a question" thread, and after thinking about it I decided maybe I should start a full thread on this. I'm a rancher. I love hats that are the Indiana Jones/Banjo Paterson/Akubra style, but I don't want to spend an arm and...

Ask a question, get an answer

Greetings, Gents. I'm looking for a rigid brim (not crushable) hat that looks somewhat like the Banjo Paterson, but not as pricey. I've surfed a couple of threads here and I've Googled a bunch of different hat styles but I haven't found any. Any suggestions?
