Funny thing about it Brent is, outside of a mass production/extremely low labor cost scenario and all other things being equal, i.e. leather sweatband, quality ribbon, etc., it's not substantially less expensive to make one out of plastic than it is straw and certainly not any easier. I can...
I'll have you covered Jonesy. Figuratively and literally. You're proving what I already think, that no human being who lives where you live could possibly ever be in a rush. Oh, I almost forgot to mention your new delivery arrangement. The next time you're visiting the mainland I'll hand deliver...
I wish I had the time to make straws Brent, as I really enjoy doing it, but I've been up to my a** in fur felt and saw dust lately. Also, it remains to be seen whether or not my straw hat apprentice has the same level of persistence and dedication to the craft that I do. It is not a process I...
You might consider checking out the used belt selections at your local thrift stores. I've found many good leather belts that can be shortened to make perfect hatbands. This company has an excellent selection of hat worthy feathers https://www.continentalfeathers.com/ I also cruise the trim and...
Check out these round relic nickel conversion bushings and the recommended bit to ream out existing peg holes Jack. If you decide to fix her up this winter feel free to PM me and I'll help you in any way I can...
Beautiful old guitar (and hat) Jack. It'll make a beautiful "wall hanger" of course, BUT it looks to be in better shape than the no name parlor guitar I just brought back to life and I'll bet you dollars to donuts that your May Bell still has some good music left in her. I always use "Silk and...
Thanks Jack. I'd love to see some pics of your Slingerland. I suppose you know that those old guitars that we considered crap back in the day are fetching premium money these days. Who'd a thought.
It sounds great now Jack. Warm and mellow with no buzzing or dead frets. It sure had plenty of cracks and one major hole to repair before, though. It came to me as a lost cause that was considered only suitable for a "wall hanging", but I thought it still had good structural integrity and...
I just finished repairing and restoring this early 1900's parlor guitar. I took great care not to compromise the 100+/- years old patina. To me, it's the kind of beauty that can only come from a very long and well lived life. Paired with my Milan straw planter's hat, it's now ready for some...
RIP indeed! The man had a profound effect on my life. I saw him last at the Bijou here in Knoxville in 2007 and he looked the same as he did when I first saw him in the late 70's. A timeless personification of a bygone era.
