Possible, but I don't think it looks the same as this. Perhaps, I'm naive. He didn't look "bad". He looked sloppy. Like he'd just rolled out from under a car. She was eyeballing me a bit so I'm guessing she might have liked the button down shirt with a light straw fedora look better than the...
A few years ago, I wore a light colored straw stingy brim to an outdoor church function. As soon as I walked up, it started. About 3 different people made comments about "oh no! The mafia is here!"
Of course, wanting to drain the wind out of their sails, I played dumb. "What do you mean?"
"You...
I generally assume (choose to believe) that the VAST MAJORITY of those comments come from jealousy. Truth be told, most men don't have the guts to wear anything beyond a ball cap in public. Some guys are just clueless about style and appearance.
The other day, my wife and I went out for sushi...
Very nice hat. Great ribbon.
Righteous beard, BTW! It makes the hat look all that much better. Large brim, large beard...good balance.

Thanks for the suggestion. Honestly, my pith looks pretty trashy and probably isn't very photogenic. It has dirt smudges on the outside, sweat stains on the pug, and the inside has been highly modified. The inside of the helmet got wet and the liner sagged. So I cut a few slices into it and...
I like that palm straw. I have one (different style). Mine is a Tula brand. The other big name (that I know of) is Sun Body. They're actually here in Houston, TX. Tula is in Austin, TX. I'm surprised you found the palm straw too hot. Lots of landscapers here in southeast Texas wear them outside...
Oh man! Nice! I always liked the Gus crown. I'd love to wear one but I think the crowns are a bit too tall looking for me. My face shape is a cross between a diamond and an oval. Those gus crowns seem to look better on round faces and square faces to me. I'd be afraid it would make my face look...
I don't know the answer to your question about the hats, but "happy Independence Day" is the appropriate greeting to Americans on the 4th of July.
...and thank you!

LOL! Can't help but think he was trying to prank you. My family, on my mother's side, is all from Puerto Rico and I've never heard of that before. Cheese in your cocoa...how funny!
After using a couple genuine pith helmets for a couple years, I'd like to weigh in again and revise some of my initial comments. Namely, I'm not sure where the idea (myth?) of soaking or drenching the pith helmet originated, but I'm sure it's in error. My helmets are made in Vietnam from pith...
It's a Northern thing. I grew up eating vanilla ice cream on mine. I now live in Texas where no one seems to have heard of cheddar cheese on apple pie. In the northern states (especially the Midwest), it's a thing. I've tried it. It's actually pretty tasty.

Well, the pugs I have are the aftermarket wraps with a small hook on each end that fastens to the straw weave. They don't have bows exactly. I tried hit gluing a simple pug band around the crown to act as an anchor of sorts for my more decorative pugs but it didn't work as I'd hoped.
