I've seen that vendors listing before. He sure does have a lot of leather military jackets. And he charges way more than they're worth. His Cooper A-2s run around $230 for a used jacket. Those seem to have a market value closer to $140. I imagine he's overcharging this G-1 as well.
I've seen some of these on e-bay; older ones with a one-piece back, made in the USA. A couple are a "Flying Tigers" version with what appears to be a "distressed" or faded finish to the goat. Thoughts on that finish?
I wear my US-A horsehide A-2 down to freezing and just below, with a sweater or sweatshirt underneath. It's a thick hide, impenetrable to the wind, and a shirt that functions as an insulating layer takes care of the rest. I don't see ever wearing a shearling jacket in your mild climate.
For...
I think in the other thread there was some speculation about this being a Neil Cooper design from the 80s, a kind of notional interwar years flyers jacket.
However, no proof.
I personally am of mixed feelings on the design. Sometimes I look at it and think it looks pretty good, and other times...
Sorry. USAF uniform.
My original issue jacket was an oversized POS. I found a Saddlery (Cooper) A-2 on e-bay once upon a time that I liked much better, and it already had velcro, etc. Only knock on it is that it's a bit long, since S/short sizes are really, really difficult to come by...
Alright, so I found an older 1-piece back LL Bean A-2. Really like it. In fact, I'm tempted to turn it into my uniform jacket.
But that means sewing velcro receivers onto the chest.
Is that a cardinal sin to do to this jacket? Will I be banned/cursed/etc.?
What do you think?
Wow, thanks for all the great info! Certainly gives me some things to think about before I actually pull the trigger on one of these, if I do.
In the meantime, my Lands End Peacoat will hold me over. It's pretty darn warm.
I've seen a number of old Communist Bloc Greatcoats (Soviet/Bulgarian/etc) floating around on e-bay. They go pretty cheap, and just might be the accessory I need for my upcoming move to Minneapolis. Yes, I'm going to move there in the middle of December! :)
I figure, if it was made to withstand...
I wasn't issued my A-2 until I finished Mission Qual Training in the F-16. It was considered a bit of a rite of passage. Certainly not as soon as I got my AO.
Anyone know anything about these? I've only seen a couple; one with a one piece back in the more traditional style, another with a two piece back (not vertical down the center, but like a horizontal yoke across the upper back) and side entry pockets.
Of course, all that being said, I have a jacket now that I'm very happy with. The ONLY gripe I have is the length of the wrist knits; 4 inches!
Once the weather gets past jacket season, I may send it back to have shorter knits done, but for right now I'm just going to enjoy it.
Wise words indeed.
Since I was being a bit convoluted in my analysis of my US-A jacket fits, I'll summarize in another way;
The 36 was like a nicely comfortable 36 (not baggy, but room to move around) from the armpit down. But small through the shoulders and back.
The 38 is (was) a baggy fit...
Lining and knits are way different, but the cut of the jacket - the leather shell - is remarkably similar.
I'll get a side by side picture later.
I think I figured out the fit issue I had though. It's the back panel. Both jackets taper down a lot from the wide point under the armpit to the...
I own a Saddlery (Neil Cooper) A-2 from the first "re-issue" contract in the mid-80s. It's a size 38, same as my US Authentic. I was just comparing the two jackets, and the cut and pattern is REMARKABLY similar.
I also have a sample of "vintage goat" from US Authentic that is remarkably similar...
If you can wear a "standard" size, and you want to hassle with shipping, you can keep trying on and exchanging, I suppose. But, if it's too long (invariably it probably will be) then you have to order custom. And custom is non-returnable/non-exchangeable/etc. So, if you try on a 38 and it fits...
