Nudging this thread as I impatiently await the completion of a new hat. A horsehair hat band with the tassles cut-off and a modified tie-tack to hold the hat band tight around the hat.
I am a fan of a pin on the hat band. I have no idea what I might use for the next hat.
@deadlyhandsome @Frunobulax @belfastboy Thank you for correcting my line of thinking and interpretation of what I'm reading here. Hopefully I'll be ready by the time of the final exam ;)
I am never going to be a hat connoisseur but it is interesting stuff and I do like having the proper...
As is being implied in several posts (if not outright stated), vintage felt that is soft and malleable is something that improves as the felt ages. We handle vintage felt today (after it has aged 70-100+ years) and declare that it is superior in everyway to even the best custom hat made today...
You could try packing tape (wrapped inside-out around your hand). Press it on the stain and lift it up. Depending on the type of stain, the tape may grab at least some of the dirt.

Thanks guys for the insights. I have been picking up bits and pieces of information from the forum over time but every once in awhile my pea brain needs some of this info in a condensed form. I appreciate your help.
I believe they have built them indoors now. Wider. Concrete & steel.
I especially miss the old tube slides on 3-4 story school buildings. In the summers we would sometimes climb up them to slide down. They eventually put a fence over the opening.
I am seeking some clarity on vintage hat feel. I hope I am not asking a set of questions that necessitates a long answer that no one is willing to commit to answering, but the more I read the more I get curious... and a little confused.
Were all hats soft/malleable?
Do you know if hats were...
I like these old catalogs. One thing that stands out to me is, there are a lot of rough creases in the pictured hats (not so much this particular post, but many others). The predominant crease displayed in these hats though... Why did Stetson seem to put these on the taller crown hats and what...
I wouldn't know how a felt hat feels when it's 120+ degrees but the 3 weeks I was in the Phoenix area this spring a felt hat was absolutely fine everyday (highest it got was about 95). The lack of humidity helps a lot.
I wish you all the best in your new land.
Out with the old...
A "Gas Station Rescue" palm straw. It is being retired to hot, sweaty yard duties. It is much thinner than a Sunbody. The straw is cracking at the top of the crease.
And in with the new...
A Sunbody 5 3/4" crown and 4" brim.
I am a 7 3/8 but ordered one size bigger as...
Well... After a long side-trip through the back alleys of Off-topic Blvd, this thread finally got back on subject.
I had all but forgot what thread this was.
Good times. :p:p:p
Nice looking hat. I must warn you that showing up on this website as a new hat person can be a bit... risky(?). That's a rabbit (see what I did there) hole you might never come out of.
Maybe it's time we put together the Hat-Lovers Co-op, send a contingent down to the swamps of Louisiana and collect up a big batch of nutria. Start making our own felt for our custom hatters.
Who knew the 21st century would be the revival of "Nutria Quality." o_O
#madeinusawithusamaterial...
I'm just a little bit excited as the hat is underway. There is an issue with the ribbon. I would really like a 5 or 6-ply ribbon. Michael hasn't had any luck finding any (especially since it needs to match up with the whiskey colored felt.
Does anyone have any idea where to possibly find this?
