What Brent (deadlyhandsome) said.
That is exactly my "journey" with my hats. I started off wanting to keep a low profile (not being noticed too much) with my hat. But shortly after I started wearing a hat, I wanted more brim and more crown.
Granted, you'll find your personal limits - I think...

Thank you, gentlemen. Very good Intel. I have handled exactly 4 real hats in my recent life, so my knowledge of this is slim-to-none.
You have talked me back from the edge of the cliff.
Sigh.... Pleasant wife or new hat? (That's not a real question.. Don't...
Yes. I want to do just that. Basically use this as my "raw" hat body. Two reasons - 1) It would (should) save a couple hundred dollars to buy a hat body. 2) The felt is really good (in my limited experience).
I appreciate the replies you and others gave as it helps me refine my question/concern...
I have a 2021 Stetson Catera 5X (100% fur felt - I presume rabbit). It is a 7 5/8 regular oval. (My "Crash Test" Catera that has been posted in the Stetson Gun Club Catera thread: https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/stetson-gun-club-catera.25961/post-2913530 ). The open crown is about 5 1/2"...
This past weekend, I was checking out at Aldi (wearing my Major Moore Buckaroo western) and the young man said, "I really like your hat, but I don't think I'd have the confidence to wear it." I told him, "It's easier than you'd think. But then again, at my age, I don't care what others think...
I gotta admit, sometimes I get a little sad when I see a good western that "packs it's bags and moves to the big city" (converted to a fedora) but that crocheted hat band and feather - WOW!
That being said, this new hat is really something. Well done, sir. Happy New Year.
I was digging through a box of old stuff and came across an old hat. So I came here to search Henschel hats and found this thread. Seems like a good reason to bump.
Unfortunately, aside from this replica forage cap, I don't have any of my early hats. This hat was picked up in a leather shop...
I really like the ribbon on the Dobbs Featherweight. What size is that ribbon? What era is the hat?
On a separate note/thought, I don't dislike grosgrain ribbon but the 3-ply, 6-ply and this ribbon is just outstanding. Why can't these types of ribbons make a comeback?
Excellent choice of style and well done by Michael. I think Michael better order a lot more red liners.
I concur with you about the crown as that is the same thing I got on my Big Four style (soft and springy). The bash held fine but It took some time and work to get the side dents to stay...
At a street festival Saturday I saw at least 6 non-western hats on guys. A notably beat up brown pork pie; a really sharp grey fedora; what looked to be a homburg (not experienced enough to be sure) and a couple other fedoras. That doesn't count the members of the bands who seemed to favor...
I'm going to have to come back to this later. I certainly don't have the conundrum that many others are faced with as I only have three felt hats and two straws (none of my other hats really qualify for this forum).
My new Gannon is still in the break-in period so it's too soon to pick "the one."
