I was wondering what hat everyone would wear for different events/activities/etc. and, on a forum that's been around this long, there is no need to start a new thread... just bump an old thread. Though it seems every photo from the past has faded into the ethersphere. But what hat do you wear...
I have found that a 10" x 52" neoprene belt has 101 uses. Among them is resizing a hat. It also keeps sweat from getting to the felt (it can be cut to a variable height to cover all of the forehead). Double sided scotch tape holds it in place and won't tear up the felt or the sweatband when you...
If you have a quality hat there is no need to go out and get all these tools of the trade to take care of it. These hats (not just a Gannon) are pricey because they are high quality... Not precious.
They will hold up to a LOT of weather for a long time (if you are concerned then set aside $1...
Bumping this thread as this seems the best place to post this link.
It's an okay video. Nothing earth-shattering but hat lovers might find it interesting.
A question more than an assertion...
Bowlers, homburgs, fedoras, etc. made their way west (in the USA) but the cowboy hat never really made its way east. At least until after movies and mimicry became a thing?
Rmccamey said, "The bottom line is that if a hat (or cap) fits and is comfortable and looks good to you, wear it and wear it well!"
This.
If you are fortunate enough to figure out that a wool (or buffalo) felt hat is best avoided, even better.
I am a newb. I was all set to go for a Stetson...
N + 1
Where N is the number that you currently own.
The formula is universal (and strangely accurate) to the avid enthusiast/collector of X (where X is the item that you are collecting).
Science might be able to be proven and disproven but, "the math don't lie!"
Last post of the same hat. The hatband arrived. I cut the tassels off as they were too much. I think this hat is ready for the real world.
I liked that Mike at Buckaroo delivered a great hat - with an open crown, flat brim and unattached hatband. That let me take his excellent craftsmanship...
Working on the "Saddle" crease
The ridge at the back is much less pronounced (but still there).
I have the profile looking a little better
The perfectionist in me wants a little more dip in the crease but the realist in me says, go with it. I think I have the brim rolled to my liking...
Hilarious! Reminds me of "It's a Wonderful Life" when George Bailey shows up for his honeymoon and looks down at Ernie's hand, pouring a bash full of water into it... Good stuff. #hatlife
Thanks for the guidance. I am thinking it may have been easier on the palm hat because of the taper. The felt hat doesn't have any taper. I also went kind of deep on the bash so that didn't help.
BTW... those pictures with the drink... It must be 5 o'clock... somewhere...
I had good luck with this on a palm leaf hat
front
back
I am not getting the same results on the felt hat...
I was hoping to avoid the lip/ridge along the back of the hat.
I would tend to agree with you although the image of my hat is darker than the light and lighter than the dark, it is much closer to the light shade.
On a separate note, I have ordered a horsehair hat band. I have played with a couple of creases so far. It will definitely need steam to hold...
I don't know if it is the lighter or darker natural as this is my first beaver hat. It is a little darker than I expected it to be and I am pleased with that as I wasn't looking for a silverbelly type of light color. I would characterize it as grey/tan.
It's Thread Revival Wednesday!
Backstory. Last May I picked up a Stetson Catera (5X Gun Club). I then started lurking the forum to learn just a bit about felt hats and soon decided I wanted a pure beaver hat. After some research here and on the wider web, I decided I would like to get a hat from...
The FU shirt may actually beat the infamous Ball U shirt!
My friend (who went to IU) loved wearing the shirt that read "I know someone who is going to Ball U."
Ahhhh, higher learning at its finest.
I presume the Sunrise nutria espresso is similar to the Winchester beaver brown, but what Sunrise nutria color is closest to the Winchester beaver whiskey?
I believe someone said (in an earlier post in this thread) Sunrise honey was close to Winchester whiskey but I would appreciate some...
