I just got Brat Farrar (Josephine Tey, 1949) from the library and am excited to start reading it. I actually learned about it in a discussion about fountain pens, where someone said that this book was where they first learned about them. When I heard it was 1940s and murder mystery, it sounded...
I know I'm late on this reply, but in case this will help anyone:
From what I've read, hairspray wasn't used until the late '40s (in the US, at least), so I think St. Louis may have been correct when she asked if it just didn't exist. I like being authentic, and I don't use any setting spray...
You don't know how much I've fantasized about this exact situation. I don't even know where to start... I would ask how long the visit can be, but I'm afraid of the answer. I'll just say that if this happened, nothing could make me ever come back. (-:
The first thing I'd do is just walk around...
I love all the Alfred Hitchcock movies I've seen, so I'm sure I'll like the episodes, too. I just have to get ahold of them. I actually just watched The Trouble With Harry last night. It was very good, but I think Shadow of a Doubt is still my favorite.
This is the article where I found the picture of Bow Bridge in the '40s. It has lots of other pictures of Central Park in the 1940s... it would be interesting to compare it to Central Park today. I bet a lot of it's still the same. https://rarehistoricalphotos.com/central-park-pictures-1940s/
I do the sides of my head in pin curls facing toward my face, (pretty small, in rows, with about 15-20 on each side), and the back I do in about 5 rows of 2 or 3 curls that I just wrap around my finger, stick a bobby pin in the bottom, and pull my finger out. The ends stick out in the back...
Thanks for sharing! I don't have a Facebook account myself, but these sound like cool groups.
Here are the links to a couple more online '40s photo collections I've found, if anyone is interested:
If you like old cars, this one is great...
I don't use anything but shampoo on my hair ever- just water for setting. Hairspray wasn't used in the US until the very late '40s, and I like doing things the authentic mid-'40s way. I also don't wear any makeup because I'm 15 and teenagers were still generally discouraged from wearing it in...
I love searching the internet for beautiful 1930s and '40s photos to use as desktop backgrounds, fashion inspiration, or just to gaze at... do you have any favorite old photographs you've found?
If I think about this too hard I'll never make up my mind, so I'm going to go with my instinct and...
I know I'm way late on this reply, (I just joined recently), but I thought I might at least be able to help someone by responding. I bought a pair of saddle shoes from payless about a month ago, and they're working great for me. They're very comfortable and look so nice! The top has a few...
I won't use the word "sexy," but I do think every guy looks better in a suit- or at least a dress shirt and trousers. As far as I'm concerned, it was their biggest mistake to stop wearing them.
