That was nice of them to help you on the value. I understand why sellers don't want to, if anything happens during shipping good luck telling the shipper your $200 jacket was actually $1500.
I'm not saying it's not a thing, but most of the time it's being applied to normal creasing like OPs pair that just happens to be more coarse than they want. You can see in all the other guidi calf examples that it creases pretty consistently like that.
It's a very crease happy leather to the point that it gets some during the patterning and lasting process. No big deal. The whole boot will have identical creases in a month.
I remember I used to be like eww at the lasting marks on engineer boot vamps. It's just part of the process.
If you...
The picture I highlighted of the stock boots shows very similar, fairly coarse graining to your pair in the exact same place. Could easily be mistaken for your pair.
All the other used guidi calf pairs I could find showed very pronounced creases. This is just the characteristic of this leather...
I looked up some used guidi calf and it seems to primarily do this heavier creasing. None of this is 'loose grain' its just how this leather creases.
I still say at this price point they should do returns/exchanges regardless.
But saying they're defective etc is kind of silly.
Pretty much all my footwear have a horizontal crease in that area. It's where the upper wants to fold when your ankle bends. Some will be looser like my addicts and some will be tighter grain like my Maryam Bakers. Ive seen hundreds with creasing just like yours. If you don't want to risk it...
This is a natural flex point for leather footwear to crease at, and the other shoe will likely have it too after a few wears.
But I agree, may as well eat an exchange if a customer is that salty. People don't spend a car down payment on boots to get half ass customer service.
My addict HH boots have very tight, shell-section rolls in the vamps, and more 'loose grain' in the shafts. But still look fantastic.
Also it's creased in the same spot as yours. That's from the movement of the ankle, and bending that panel to take them on and off not the flexing of the toes...
Imo its a crease. Certain leathers just crease differently. Loose grain just became a buzzword for any creasing that isn't as esthetically pleasing. I almost never see real, detrimental 'loose grain'
Also, it's clearly horizontal, no idea why you would insist it's vertical.
But at their...
