Thor, I agree. The USN’s modern deck jacket is one of the warmest, most comfortable military jackets I’ve ever owned. I bought one off of eBay several years ago. Apparently, it was once aboard the Ronald Reagan. It’s a size XXL, so now it’s awfully large on me. But I like it so much, so...
Here’s my prescription for the LA summertime blues: Go to Milwaukee in December for one week. Repeat as necessary. Guaranteed to restore your love for Los Angeles (and North Carolina) weather.
AF
Spent Christmas in Milwaukee...now back in North Carolina.
This is my new ATF M-41. It just arrived today. It’s the second one I’ve owned because the first one badly outgrew me. I lost some weight after I retired, and I had to store, retire or give away much of my clothing. The jacket I...
The air temperature is around 0 and Lake Michigan is steaming behind me. Wearing a 1990s fleece sweatshirt over an old L. L. Bean wool guide shirt. And gloves.
I do own gloves. But it has to be awfully miserable outside for me to wear them. In my claustrophobic mind, I might as well be wearing handcuffs. I have a pair with me in this photo, but they’re in my coat pocket. Where they belong.
This is the kind of jacket I like most. No, I’m not particularly crazy about CWUs. But I do love a vintage flight jacket that shows her mojo. Honest wear, I think they call it.
I wish I could tell y’all her name, but her tag is long ago gone. I can tell you that she’s a late-seventies...
This is probably my oldest piece of cast iron. It’s a footed bean pot I bought along with some other things in a craigslist sale. It has a pronounced gate mark...so I’m guessing it was made in the mid-1800s...but its only other mark, is the “8J” shown in the photo. I have no clue what this...
Thanks! It is my favorite skillet. It has a lid, so it’s great for baking pork chops and other meats. And it’s small enough to be the perfect size for two people.

I am also a cast iron user but not a collector. These are three generations of skillets from my Mom’s side of the family. The hammered finish, lidded skillet belonged to my maternal great-grandmother. I think it’s an unmarked Chicago Hardware Foundry #8. Next, to its left, is my...
ATF N-1 Deck Jacket...getting to be a real deck jacket, this evening. Keeping me toasty warm while we participated in the 2017 New Bern Christmas Flotilla.
A movement to advance the civil rights of African Americans was steadily gaining momentum in the United States, and, though few people knew it, the country had already begun it’s slide into the abyss that was the Vietnam War. A popular Liverpool band called the Beatles was topping the charts in...
Leather zipper pulls weren’t on original A-2s, but other things were added as field mods...bomb arming pin tags, common among them. G-1s from the Vietnam era, through today, were issued with the little leather zipper pulls. Some vintage nylon jackets had leather pull tabs on both their main...
I call this my hybrid-vintage G-1. I say hybrid, because it never served in the military...it was brand new when I bought it. But, except for its mouton collar, its a mil-spec E-series G-1. And I bought it directly from Orchard Motorcycle, who had recently been the government contract...
Yes, this makes perfect sense. After I posted last night, I did a quick eBay search for issued MA-1s. There were two decent ones...certainly not mint...but decent. Neither was size XL. One had a BIN price of 279 USD. The other was 400 USD. I understand BIN pricing doesn’t necessarily...
I’ve been reading the last posts on this thread with great interest. Are original nylon flight jackets not available, nowadays? Or are folks just not interested in originals the way they once were? It seems odd to me that nylon junkies might pay more than £400 for a reproduction 1960s MA-1...
Cold, dark and damp on the farm tonight. Out for an evening stroll...walking the cat and listening to the night sounds. ATF Tanker to keep me warm. M-3 and companion to keep me company.
Indeed I do. This is a 1972 Alpha. The air temperature that day was around five degrees F. With the windchill, it was well below zero F. As you can see, the lake behind me was frozen solid. I wore only a cotton mock turtleneck shirt under the MA-1 and was fairly comfortable as long as I was...
@Gamma68, that is a nice looking jacket! Sadly, I know very little about reproduction nylon. If there’s a way to date civilian Alphas, I’m afraid I’m unaware of it.
