Simple, don’t cancel your order. Rather ask them to leave it on hold & reinvigorate the order within the next 12 months. I’d bet they’d be open to something along these lines.
I’ve got both. The first observation is that hides of any variety (FQHH, Goat, Vicenza etc) can ALL vary significantly from batch to batch. I had a goat slim half belt years ago that felt like cardboard. Pretty sure it was an anomaly (or perhaps the prior owner did something to it).
