Promised to take some fit pics of the Flying Dominator and FW Brakeman, so I'll post them here, accompanied by the jacket I'm actually wearing today: an early RMC A-2.
Lewis Leathers Flying Dominator, Nappa Sheepskin, Size L:
Freewheelers Brakeman, Size 44, Rude Black Shinki Horsehide...
Bookbinder treatment is indeed a great example of questionable leather-coating: it has bad reputation, and a well-deserved one, in shoe-making as it has been mostly used in fast fashion to hide poor, split leather, to add artificial gloss and to keep costs down. Even though the treatment might...
Thanks, that Shinki doesn't look appealing to me either, and it's clearly different to the ones I have and have handled. There's surely something going on with the tannery at the moment.
Whatever the truth, I'm more than happy to have a decade old FW Brakeman in decent rude black Shinki.
Quantity surely plays important role in this as well as Shinki is still on the small side as a tannery. So the demand may well exceed the supply big time forcing many makers to look elsewhere.
If I remember correctly, Ken once reflected using Shinki in (some) Aero jackets, but the tannery was...
I find goatskin great for jackets and in fact a bit underrated.
Good-quality goat is very resistant to tears and scratches. It's thinner, softer and more flexible compared, for example to cowhide, but at the same time more abrasion-resistant. This is due to high tensile strength of goatskin.
I bought the supply jacket (unlined) when they first came out couple of years ago and have used it well during the milder seasons. It's lightweight and great to pull on and wear. Plenty of nice character also on the waxed canvas already.
Edit. Oh, Aloysius beat me to it; exactly my thoughts.
Shinki shell has been long considered as the cheapest option in shoe-making, and used only by lower-range makers, such as Meermin. The quality, in terms of thickness, consistency and color, has been nowhere near Horween shell or the ones...
This just arrived. Amazingly soft, pebbly sheepskin with a lot of character already.
The fit is a tad on the snug side when zipped up but still wearable, esp. with a thinner layer underneath. I'll try to shoot some fit pics some day for you to judge.
I would also recommend Aero's Cafe Racer with a request for more taper to the waist.
This is a straight out of the box fit pic of mine with August collar and 1" more taper on both sides:
Two long-sought-after pieces finally on their way to supplement my rack:
-Lewis Flying Dominator, L
-Freewheelers Brakeman, 44
I also have a Lewis Corsair in production.
The first two should be with me this week, the Corsair takes a bit longer. Fingers crossed everything goes smoothly.
Thanks - the 42 should be fine!
Below the Corsair measurements I found from a French retailer's site (pretty much the same as with the Dominator above): https://paradisemotoshop.com/products/ll-60-the-corsair
SIZE CHART: 60 CORSAIR (REGULAR)
SIZE 42
CHEST 115,5
HEM 108
LENGTH 63
SHOULDER 48,5...
As this thread is already up, a short question about Corsair measurements:
I'm about to put the order in for the jacket but struggling a bit with the size. My chest measures around 41' and my choice of the hide would be veg tan sheep. Yet sheep can be used only to sizes up to 42, and Rip thinks...
