"Felting" is a technique or step in the hat making process including heat , moisture and pressure ... and similar to the process used to achieve this edge treatment
hence the term "felted edge"
not sure if Champ had a name for the treatment ... if they did I don't know what it is
Those Sovereigns are some of the nicer pieces out of the late 50/early 60s such as this piece
they were quite nice in a time when most American manufactured hats had already turned to $#!£
most high quality fedoras come open crown... or at least they used to when hats we of much better quality than they are now

nothing more than a subjective aesthetic
I prefer a rumpled deep crease and the furthest thing from a factory blocked crease when it is on my head ... but I appreciate all of them if they were applied by ones own hands
when I imagine the crease I desire it looks like this
